Another environmental rant
I am really sorry to bleat on about recycling but I have another issue to raise. My local authority is Tendring council and they have elected not to take any loose plastics in their fortnightly recycling of plastic products. That’s ANY loose plastics including previously recycled materials like carrier bags, uncontaminated food packaging, anything delivered or wrapped in plastics, ad infinitum. When I phoned them to enquire what I should do with said items, their retort – ‘Put it in the landfill bag’! I asked why they won’t take it and they said ‘because we don’t make money on plastics recycling unless it’s bottles so it’s not worth our while’. Flabbergasted I then asked why they wouldn’t consider a change to their policy as plastics can take 100’s of years to break down and their reply was ‘what’s the point’.
This was their environmental officer!
Is it me or is this planet on a collision course to self-destruction?
