"Metropolitan Stories" by Christine Coulson
A long-time, senior member of the Metropolitan Museum of Art staff takes a sabbatical to write a novel about the Museum - a series of stories that examine the daily life and workings of the Museum in the voice and through the eyes of the art that lives within the Museum, the people whose energy make the Museum function, and the odd individuals who visit the Museum.
What a clever approach to sharing the Museum with us. Clever isn't easy to do, so Metropolitan Stories' achievement is notable. My favorite story is told in the voice of a centuries old chair that is desperate for someone to sit, because isn't that why chairs are made?
If there is any letdown within Metropolitan Stories, it is the author's labor to rise above cleverness and offer humor in these stories. For me, the humor did not connect. Nonetheless, what a pleasant and mind-expanding way to learn about mystery of museums.
