Another 30,000 kids taught about bees and 1,000,000 Bee-Saving flowers planted! ??????

On 20th May, it was World Bee Day. On this day in 1734, Anton Jansa, the pioneer of beekeeping, was born. And in 2017 the UN member states approved Slovenia’s proposal to proclaim 20th May as World Bee Day. The purpose of the international day is to acknowledge the role of bees and other pollinators for our ecosystem.

The stat that always shocks me is that we (humans) rely on bees for ONE in every THREE mouthfuls of food we eat, due to their vital work as pollinators. And in the last few years bees have been struggling – we have lost 13 species and another 35 are currently at risk. I really can’t imagine a world without foods like apples, strawberries, coffee and nuts. Can you?!

This year, we decided to have our biggest celebration of World Bee Day to date. We teamed up with sustainability consultants?Mainer Associates to run a special campaign to get more kids interested in bees and the environment. For every order we received through our website on 20th May we pledged to send a school a Save the Bees education pack including a box of wildflower seeds to plant, a planting guide, a teaching guide and some other bee activities too!

And boy did our customers step up to the plate! We received a whopping 300 orders through our website on World Bee Day and we also had 300 schools sign up to the campaign so every one of them has been sent one of our Save the Bees education packs. Thank you so much for your support in this amazing campaign.

And after totting up the figures, it’s pretty astonishing the impact it will have… If each school plants the seeds we sent and teaches 100 kids about bees, that’s 30,000 more children engaged with bees and the environment and over ONE MILLION more bee friendly flowers planted across the UK this summer!!?Our current total bee saving flowers planted is now up to 16,000,000!!
