another 10 pointers @ last 4 months.
These are ten new learning ponts that I have picked up since last four
months in my current role.
In no particular order nor importance . . .
Remember - trouble-free project and smooth tasks are non existence, get real. You often get more 'bonus surprises' when you have poor and incompetent PMs. This can be extremely unpredictable and very unpleasant - just stay focused.
Learn quickly to assess calculated risk; avoid putting all eggs in one basket - is a very good start.... but not spreading too thin.
Decide and work on absolute-essential for Day1 deliverable, work out detailed plans for Day2
Rope in stake-holder buy in, keep everyone informed on key decisions. Keep them posted on cost and timeline constantly. All exec hates surprises.
Learn the fine art and science of CYA, and cover all your bases. CYA is not always a bad thing. You make someone accountable and responsible.
Assemble your core team, help them work as one-team, help them focus and deliver results. Give and provide frank and honest feedback; be open.
Listen, gather and read-up industry best practices and suggestions. No harm in learning and knowing more.
You must hold consultant, MSI and even subcon responsible for their task and deliverable. Be harsh and stern and, escalate upward - if needed.
As a team, make decision promptly, and strive to make it good. Be very bold especially when you do not have all the facts and figures.
Keep close watch team member's stress and pressure levels. Help to alleviate road blocks, chop off distraction.
