Annus horribilis... Or was it???

Annus horribilis... Or was it???

2017 appeared at times to be my 'annus horribilis'...

Mostly due to the unexpected passing away of my darling younger brother at only 44 years of age. This rocked my world & unfortunately coincided with the time I was launching a new business.

I also lost friends, I lost work, I invested significant amounts of money into building a new business without any return yet (it's only been 6 months) & the settlement of the property I am divesting to inject shareholder equity into my business was delayed unexpectedly.... And let's not even mention the issues I've been having with my beloved Porsche :)

But that's just life right? Especially as an Entrepreneur & passionate human being (with slight control freak personality traits)... Things happen that you can't always see coming & that you don't have any control over.

On the positive side, the achievements were:

  • We had our best year ever in the coaching business
  • I personally helped over 200 entrepreneurs this year through coaching & workshops to achieve their professional & personal goals & the business helped many more
  • Our clients have won international awards for their business
  • I set up a new business that will enable me to help even more Entrepreneurs in the future (www.thecommon.co.nz)
  • I have made substantial and long term investments into the infrastructure required to help entrepreneurs both now and in the future
  • I've been invited to speak at some great events around the country
  • We have hosted international speakers & some of NZ's top brands at The Common
  • We had Married at First Sight & Jake Millar film in our premises (both were fun in their own way!)
  • I met some amazing new people & formed strong alliances & friendships
  • I found old friends again
  • I had some amazing adventures on the way

It's inevitable that life will deal you lemons along the way.... The best thing you can do is look for the lessons that you can learn from them.

Therefore I'm very grateful for this last year - It has taught me some very valuable lessons...

  • Life is just too short - Grab every moment & every opportunity, be present, have fun & appreciate it
  • Family is the most important thing you have - Tell them often how much you love them
  • True friends are always there for you - Even when you sometimes don't recognise it
  • Ask for help when you need it - Let others have the joy of helping too
  • Don't stress about the things you can't change - Just focus on what you can

I go into 2018 full of gratitude & love... Excited by what more I have to learn this year & what I can create & co-create with my gorgeous family, friends & colleagues. I won't leave it to chance... I have a plan & I am surrounding myself with the right people... Together we will make a difference!

I wish you, your family & your friends a fantastic year ahead... Let's make 2018 the best year yet!

After being diagnosed with a life threatening illness and losing my Mum I also felt that 2017 was an annus horribilis. So sorry to hear about your year Debra. I think your words are so true - very well said indeed. All the very best for 2018 and let's stay optimistic and focussed on the year ahead!
