That Annual Call

That Annual Call

OK, I know many of my fellow RISD friends and alums don't look forward to getting a call from the RISD Annual Fund - but I actually love it. Maybe it's because I remember being on the other side of it, as a work study student. At the time, (and still remains to be), it was one of the best paying work study jobs to have on campus. I began as a Freshman and worked every year while at RISD. I eventually became the student supervisor my Junior and Senior year, which entailed helping others with calls, coding cards and ensuring everyone understood the script and sounded kind and appropriate.

Tonight, I saw my phone light up with the local 401 number coming in from Providence. Her voice began by asking for me, by my full name, and then right into the script. It brought a large smile to my face, the familiarity of the script and just knowing that this, was that annual call. My husband has witnessed me get these calls, and he teases me about enjoying them too much and that I end up relaying my good ol' days of calling to the current student. As an active alumni, I stay in touch with what is happening on campus and am often back on campus to hear about changes or happenings.

Tonight, my student was a sophomore in Apparel Design from Hawaii. She loves RISD and is enjoying her time so far.

I was also happy to hear that their is an alum helping with matching gifts for the first $25K raised for any new and increased gifts. I like incentives like this and aspire to one day, be an alum that can provide an opportunity like this.

So in this time and spirit of giving, I hope we can all think about giving back, not just financially, but with our time, mentorship, leadership and talent. @risd1877 #RISDClassof2005 #givingthanks #RISDmemories#giveback #spiritofgiving #fullcircle #makeitcount #payitforward#bepartofthechange #supportTheArts

I was fortunate to receive scholarships and have the support of my parents, family, teachers and community. They all rooted for my success. I feel an immense sense of gratitude and good fortune. Thank you for believing in me, for investing in my goals and impact, for thinking that my dreams can be your dreams and that they matter.
