The other day I was waiting my turn to buy coffee at the counter of a coworking space in the city.

My eyes landed on the board listing the drinks available.

A coffee was CHF/$ 6.50 (!)

(welcome to Switzerland, where everything is crazy expensive)

At that moment, I had a flashback from the time I was working as a waitress when I was a student.

Because when I started waitressing more than two decades ago, a cup of coffee was CHF/$ 2.90.

As it turns out, coffee is now more than twice that.

And after a quick back-of-the-envelope calculation, I realized that this represents 3.6% in inflation each year on average.

That's very high.

And because looking at something as small as a coffee may make it hard to understand what inflation really means…

… here is another way to look at it.

Let's say you're 45 years old and have $20,000 saved up for touring the world once you retire.

You might think it's nice and safe there in the bank…?

… when in fact, it's gradually losing in value every year due to inflation.

With 3.6% in inflation per year, your $20k will only be worth the equivalent of $9.6k by the time you reach 65.

And this is crazy.?

And annoying.

That's why saving is not that safe.

Actually, when you look at it from a fresh perspective:

Saving is one of the riskiest financial strategies you can have.

And the only alternative is to invest.?

The only alternative is to invest more and better - and for a long time.

That's certainly what I do, what my sisters do…
