SQL Server 2022 comes cloud-connected built-in, is the most secure database in the industry over the last decade, includes a built-in blockchain with Ledger, is an industry leader in price/performance, and gains you performance with no code changes.
Like previous releases, SQL Server can be deployed on Windows, Linux, Containers, Kubernetes, and on Azure Virtual Machine. SQL Server setup includes the ability to connect SQL Server to Azure as an Azure Arc-enabled SQL Server including a new Pay-as-you-Go (PAYG) licensing model. SQL Server 2022 is available in all editions including Developer, Express, Web, Standard, and Enterprise. See all the features for each edition at https://aka.ms/sql2022editions .

SQL Server now links to Azure SQL Managed Instance for managed disaster recovery. Synapse Link for SQL can be used to offload read workloads and achieve near real-time analytics. Microsoft Purview can be used for central governance to publish access policies for authentication and authorization using Azure Active Directory (AAD) Authentication.
SQL Server 2022 includes the next generation of Intelligent Query Processing along with Query Store enhancements and integration to gain you performance with no code changes:
The SQL Server engine is the core of the data platform and SQL Server 2022 comes with major new capabilities in security, availability, and scalability:
Finally, SQL Server builds on the innovation of Polybase providing new database virtualization features for your data lake with new REST API connectors including S3-compatible object storage providers:
S3-compatible object storage support also includes the ability to use T-SQL to backup and restore databases. In addition, the T-SQL language has new enhancements for JSON, core T-SQL, and time series.
