Announcing the Opening of a New School in Kakata, Liberia, West Africa

Today, Hawa and I are pleased to announce that we have agreed with Mr. Diafei Giddings, the owner of the Giddings Polytechnic Institute, to launch the Giddings Polytechnic Academy in Kakata, Margibi County. The new school, the Giddings Polytechnic Academy, will be a part of the Real Academy International School System. The Giddings Polytechnic Academy, a grade 7-10 school, will be the second school we are opening in about a year. We are thankful to Mr. Giddings for the partnership, as well as the opportunity provided us to serve the deserving people of our native, Kakata.

We are excited about this new venture, not because of the potential to reap financial remuneration. We intend to invest in the school at a loss for the next three years. So, our excitement is about the bigger picture: the chance to establish the best institution ever in Kakata.

The Giddings Polytechnic Academy will be a paradigm shift in the way we run schools, educate our children, and develop the total child. We will be using the REAL Academy’s model of inquiry-based learning with a Liberian context. More than this, our students will not only be the recipients of content - they will become content creators. Each student of the Giddings Polytechnic, upon completion of both junior and senior high courses, will produce an electronic binder of their learning. The students learn Science by not by “writing the notes today and listening to the teachers explain the next day”. They will learn Science by doing. Our students will not learn history by recalling dates and events. They will discuss the events of history and suggest ways to move forward. Our students will not learn English Language Arts by memorizing the rules of grammar. They will write short stories, essays, articles, produce dramas and plays and write speeches. In math classes, the focus will be more on open-ended problems rather than one answer “problems.”  We will encourage our students to think and not just memorize. Students will select a track and pursue rigorous instruction in their chosen focus area. Students in the Arts track will have the option to take advanced courses in Creative Writing, Advanced Civis, Information Technology, and Business and Entrepreneurship. For those in the Science track, we will offer Introduction to Engineering, Agricultural Sciences, Introduction to Nursing Fundamentals, Information Technology, and Computer Science. Does it sound like a lot? Yes, it does. That’s why we are committing our resources to lead this shift.

Though all of this sounds like it is a lot, we are not stopping there. We believe in the development of the complete child. That is why we offer a myriad of extracurricular activities. Sports, debate club, chess club, quizzing teams, and many more are some of the extracurricular activities. Our extracurricular activities will be well organized and run by paid teachers/para-educators sponsors. And, as a part of the community, our activities will involve students at other institutions and even other institutions. Our school will be a hub for young people in Margibi County to showcase their talents.

And, at Giddings Polytechnic Academy, our focus will be on the success of each student. In this regard, our Entrance and Placement Exams will not be about restricting access to our school. It will allow us to know where each child is in their learning so that we can develop an appropriate instructional program to meet his/her need. Here is where our free Saturday tutoring in Math and English comes. We will offer Saturdays tutoring for all needy and eligible students at no cost to families. We will even accept students from other schools in Kakata in our Saturday tutoring.

Lest we forget, we have a state-of-the-art Science laboratory, a decent library, and excellent facilities. Visit us now to see the renovation taking place at our location in Sugar Hill, Kakata. Our tuition is low. Our fees are the lowest in Kakata.

This initiative is a lifelong dream to serve my people. This is why we encourage all to support us. Want to be a part? Have an idea to share with us? Call us at
