The Anniversary of Accomplishment
As the FERZANCOMPANY team sat down at Buddakan NYC for our first holiday dinner, we were celebrating not only the season but having just surpassed our first year in business. Riding back to Long Island later that night, while slipping in and out of a Peking Duck coma, I thought about the substance of those milestones and anniversaries I've been most proud of: when looking back, it's remembering adversities overcome that brings deeper meaning to those times that stand out in my mind.
Anniversaries approach with anticipation, are celebrated, and then pass with a bit of a feeling of liberation at the achievement of having made it, intact, for another fixed measurement of time. Over the course of the last revolution around the sun we launched a business from a kitchen table, then an office barely large enough for two but staffed with three, then four, then five… then more. We spilled out onto the adjacent desks, which we didn't own but commandeered until we couldn’t stake claim any longer. We moved into a larger space, which we have now again outgrown. We expanded from New York to the south-east and west coasts.
By definition, to reach an anniversary one must do little more than stay afloat. But while milestones can be reached just by waiting and gliding down the river, they aren’t as deeply celebrated as significant successes without the addition of risk, hard work, and the many seemingly insurmountable wrenches thrown into the gears of that journey. Challenging times usually require a decision to keep pressing on even in the face of adversity, but the experience makes milestones reached taste significantly sweeter, and the learning born out of the effort builds the strength and character required to keep pressing on toward many more significant anniversaries to come.
As we surpass our first year in business, I am extremely proud at what we have accomplished as an organization. Heading into 2019, we are actively building our team and beginning our involvement in several exciting, monumental projects representing a number of visionary clients. I'm even more proud to say that we have earned every ounce of support we’ve received, worked hard for every step we’ve taken along the way, and as we continue to grow we will earn each day’s successful end, and each year’s anniversary.
Happy Holidays and a very Happy New Year to all, and a big thank you to my family at FERZANCOMPANY!
