Animation Tip - Keyframe MP, Reference Plugin!

There is a program called Keyframe MP that can take reference video and sync it to Maya, letting you scrub the Maya timeline and the video player will match. This is awesome because it is far less demanding on your cpu than using an image plane, and comes with a ton of options, including choosing to always have the video player on top of everything else, or choosing when the timeline starts so you don't have to edit the reference video.
