Angola is a Southern African nation whose varied terrain encompasses tropical Atlantic beaches, a labyrinthine system of rivers and Sub-Saharan desert that extends across the border into Namibia. Angola is known for its natural resources, particularly oil and diamonds. - The capital city, Luanda, is known for its lively atmosphere and beautiful beaches. China is Angola's biggest trade partner and export destination as well as a significant source of imports.

Angola has diamonds, oil, gold, copper and rich wildlife (which was dramatically depleted during the civil war), forest and fossil fuels. Since independence, oil and diamonds have been the most important economic resource.

Angola is a member of the United Nations, African Union, the Community of Portuguese Language Countries, and the Southern African Development Community.

Angola centers its port trade in five main ports: Namibe, Lobito, Soyo, Cabinda and Luanda. The port of Luanda is the largest of the five, as well as being one of the busiest on the African continent.

Despite the government’s initiatives, Angola’s national healthcare system is not on par with the standards of global healthcare systems.? It has limitations in resources: a shortage of medical professionals and skills as described above, exacerbated by poor infrastructure, insufficient availability of medical services, and inadequate budget.

Market Entry and Registration Process for Pharmaceutical and Other Healthcare Products

The Government of Angola has replaced the National Directorate for Medicines and Equipment (DNME), formerly in charge of the healthcare supply chain system, with the Regulatory Agency for Medicines and Healthcare Technologies (ARMED), a more robust structure to respond to the???? challenging healthcare environment.

Some times products can be imported without registration in Angola.

At present, there are 13 private pharmaceutical laboratories certified to operate in the Angolan market namely:? AstraZeneca, Bayer Health Care, Bial, BluePharma, Dafra Farma, Edol, GSK, Labesfal, Laboratórios Azevedos, Merck Serono, Sandoz, Sanofi, and Tecnifar. Novartis and Shalina are awaiting approval.

To import into Angola, pharmaceutical products must be registered with ARMED, submitted for laboratory tests to meet compliance to norms and standards, and be labelled in the Portuguese language.

Only resident companies can import, and they must be registered and licensed by ARMED.

The Ministry of Health reports that pharmaceutical purchases, primarily imports, total over $60 million per year.
