Angling for a pay bump this year?

The cost-of-living crisis may be biting but new LinkedIn research shows Australians are feeling more optimistic about their finances.?

LinkedIn’s Australian Workforce Confidence Index showed surveyed professionals were more likely to agree they had the confidence to improve their financial situation compared with last quarter. Confidence in career progression was also on the rise.?

The research also found 53% of Australian employees said they received a pay increase in the past year. Yet only 40% expect one in the next six months, and 23% expect to be promoted this year.??

Fractional change leader Friska Wirya tells LinkedIn it’s more important to rely on intrinsic factors like meaningful work, growth opportunities and a positive culture than pay increases.?

“Companies can still keep morale high sans bonuses and raises. You just need to think creatively,” she said.?

“Try flexibility over cash — provide flexible work arrangements like compressed workweeks or unlimited paid time off, empowering them to manage their time and priorities.”

Leadership coach Sleiman “Slayman” Abou-Hamdan said that while businesses may not be in a position to offer pay raises, they could offer online learning or other perks.?

“People thrive when they're given the chance to learn and grow,” he told LinkedIn. “Offering opportunities for skill-building and career advancement is a major win.”? ?

LinkedIn research showed Australian workers planned to improve their skills this year, with 60% planning online study and a further 38% intending to study in a classroom setting.?

Asking for a raise outside of the recruitment cycle can be challenging. However, it always pays to itemise your work achievements and "what's in me for it" (meaning, what more you have to offer to your role and employer). Good luck with that! Thanks for sharing.
