Job Offer Crossroad: When One Offer is Certain and Another is Pending
A friend of mine found herself at a pivotal career crossroad recently, and our conversations about it revealed just how complex navigating job offers can be, especially in the high-stakes world of advertising.
She's a seasoned professional who had risen to the rank of Vice President at an ad agency but found herself in the all-too-common position of being out of work for several months.
Then, an opportunity knocked: a Director position at another agency. It was a step down from her previous role, both in title and salary — a throwback to the compensation she received a decade ago. Understandably, she hesitated.
Simultaneously, she was in the running for a different role with a brand company. This job was a new frontier for her, promising fresh experiences and knowledge in advertising and marketing. The catch? The company's hiring process was glacial, and even if an offer was extended, the wait wasn't over; a lengthy background check would follow.
Confronted with a certain yet less desirable offer and a potentially great one shrouded in uncertainty, she turned to me. I advised her pragmatically: the brand role held no guarantees, and while the Director position didn't match her former status or pay, it was solid. She needed to think about her immediate needs and those of her family.
In such a complex situation, my advice leaned towards a more strategic approach. If the brand offer does come through, I recommend she should accept it, despite the potential drawbacks. This recommendation isn't made lightly, knowing it may mean 'burning bridges' with the agency offering the Director position. But, the brand role presents a significant step forward in her career, aligning more closely with her long-term aspirations in the advertising and marketing field. It's a rare chance to advance and expand her expertise. However, it's crucial to proceed cautiously. She shouldn't give her notice at the agency until she has successfully gone through the brand company’s background check and holds a solid, confirmed offer in her hands. This approach balances the pursuit of a better opportunity with the practical need to maintain career stability during the transition.
Decision made, she accepted the Director role. It seemed settled, but the plot thickened. Within the same company, a VP role opened up — precisely aligning with her expertise. It was an unexpected twist that seemed to offer everything she wanted.
After discussing the situation with two friends in talent recruitment, they suggested a bold move: reach out to HR and express interest in the VP position. It's not the kind of advice given lightly, as it involves significant risk and the potential to burn bridges. Yet, sometimes, the pursuit of a fitting opportunity warrants taking that chance.
And so she did. She contacted HR, candidly discussing her qualifications and her interest in the VP role.
The crux of this story is about more than just job titles and offers. It's a testament to the power of self-advocacy and the importance of aligning one's career with both immediate and long-term goals. It underscores a truth many of us face in our professional lives: sometimes, the best decision is not the safest one.
My friend's journey through this job offer labyrinth is a reminder that while the advice of others can guide us, the path we choose is ultimately our own. When faced with a career crossroad, it's crucial to evaluate not just the offers on the table but also the potential of what might be — and sometimes, it means reaching for the opportunity that feels just out of grasp.
At the end of the day, the decisions we make must resonate with our personal and professional aspirations. If a better opportunity presents itself, one that promises growth and aligns more closely with our ambitions, it's worth pursuing. Sometimes, taking that leap can lead to the path we were meant to follow all along.

Final Drum Roll: Celebrating Eric John's Rockstar Beat at IAB
The echoes of the final drum beat still resound in the halls of the Interactive Advertising Bureau ( IAB ), marking the end of an era. Eric John , the drumming Vice President of the Media Center, played his closing riff on October 30th, leaving behind a legacy as enduring as any classic rock anthem. For seven years, Eric drummed up innovation and strategy with the flair and passion of a rock legend.
Like a skilled drummer in a world-class rock band, Eric set the rhythm for the IAB's groundbreaking initiatives. The NewFronts became Eric's sold-out arena shows, each announcement hitting the industry like a perfectly timed drum solo that reverberates long after the event. The Podcast Upfronts throbbed with the vitality of his beats, while the Video and Audio Leadership Summits mirrored an intimate, acoustic set where every drumbeat was felt in the heart of the audience.
Eric's camaraderie extended beyond the stage lights, as he formed a band of colleagues and partners, their bonds as strong as those forged in music and shared experiences. His friendship was the backstage pass to lasting connections, his partnership a co-writing session of IAB's chart-topping hits.
In the studio of leadership, Eric's drumming was always in perfect time, guiding us through complex rhythms with the ease of a hit-making drummer. He showed us how to lead with the resonance of a power ballad and the finesse of a finely tuned snare.
Now, as the stage lights dim on Eric's time with us and the drumsticks are laid to rest, the melody of his next journey begins to play. His heart, always in sync with the beat of his drums, promises a future where his love for music and digital advertising will continue to resonate.
So here's to Eric John—may the rhythm of your past performances inspire your future encores. Rock on, Eric, your legendary beats at IAB will continue to inspire for years to come.

1 年The Crossroad Offer story hit home! I was in the same boat this month, but declined the offer because the salary was too low. A lot of people told me I was insane to decline the offer but I couldn’t go back to a decade old salary. I don’t regret it, but I have to admit that this has been the worse job hunt of my life, and has made me second guess many life choices. Over 200 resume submissions, 40 interviews that didn’t end with an offer and only 1 offer that cut my salary requirements in half. It’s been brutal but I know I will find my next career with the right team and the right company!! Thank you for putting this Newsletter together! Always a good read!! ??
