Andrea Palladio, Thank You for being Awesome!

I'm a fan of all great architecture, but I definitely have a soft spot for the timeless beauty of classical architecture. It will never go out of style. This linked article (click here) discusses a curated Palladio exhibit at the Riba in London (which runs through January in case you are planning a trip across the pond), but also includes a nice review of Palladio's influence on architecture. Here are two quotes from the article:
"Palladio introduced the concept that Roman architecture could be adapted to benefit all social classes," says Hind, "and that's one reason why his influence has remained more potent than any other architect."
"Palladianism breathes permanence, deliberation and an Olympian calm," says Hind. It suggests "we're going to stay here".
Two points new to me:
- While perhaps not obvious at first glance, Palladian rules have been used in more modern architectural styles over the past 100 years.
- He was also the first architect to integrate classical porticos into domestic housebuilding. Until then they had really only been used on religious buildings.
