The Ancient Roots of Modern Resilience: How the Practice of Self-Preservation Connects Us to Our Primal Strength

NOTICE: This article is somewhat different than I typically post here; I hope you enjoy it. For the past three decades, I have taught people from all walks of life how to keep themselves safe while applying the practice to show up in life: calm, focused, present and resilient. In just over a week's time, I will be hosting a self-preservation skills development workshop in Fresno; if you would like to experience first-hand what is covered in this article, there are still a few tickets available to attend HERE. Feel free to reach out to me to discuss further.

The Primal Strength of Our Ancestors

In the heart of the African savanna, under the vast, unending sky, our ancestors embarked on a journey of survival and self-discovery. This journey was not just about hunting and gathering; it was about developing an inner strength that has been passed down through generations. Today, we find echoes of this primal strength in the practice of self-preservation skills training, a discipline that does more than teach us how to defend ourselves — it connects us to the resilience and fortitude of our earliest forebears.

Our early ancestors faced a world fraught with challenges that tested their physical and mental limits. Every day was a battle for survival, demanding agility, strength, and strategic thinking. These challenges honed their natural instincts, not only forging them into adept survivors but also into beings of profound emotional and spiritual depth.

In modern times, we often overlook this connection to our past. Yet, the essence of this ancient primal intelligence still resides within us, waiting to be awakened. I believe when done right, learning self-preservation skills serve as a bridge to this past, offering a path to rediscover the latent capabilities ingrained in our very DNA.

Self Preservation Training: A Modern Pathway to Ancient Primal Strength

Self-preservation skills are not merely a set of techniques to deal with interpersonal conflict; they are a gateway to understanding ourselves and our intrinsic human nature. Through disciplined training, we don't just learn kicks and punches; we embark on a journey of self-discovery and personal growth.

Inner Resilience

Self-preservation training strengthens the body, undoubtedly. But this physical strength is more than muscle and endurance; it's about developing an inner resilience that mirrors the capabilities of our ancestors, who traversed vast landscapes and faced formidable predators.

Mental Fortitude

The mental discipline required in acquiring real world, tested self-preservation skills reflects the strategic thinking and mental toughness of early humans. Each move, strategy and tactic learned requires foresight, focus, presence, and the ability to remain calm — qualities that were essential for survival in the wild and are just as relevant in today's fast-paced world. In fact, I spend much of my time with students coaching them on how to develop presence, focus, a calm disposition and overall inner resilience. Again, all character traits that would have been seen by our forebears as crucial to surviving in the wild.

Emotional and Spiritual Connection

Perhaps the most profound aspect of self-preservation training is its ability to connect us emotionally and spiritually to our ancient roots. The practice, when approached with developing inner skills, encourages mindfulness, inner peace, and a deep sense of connection to the natural world — echoing the spiritual journey of our ancestors who found meaning and purpose in their struggle for survival.

Reclaiming Our Heritage

By practicing self-preservation skills, we are not just learning to protect ourselves; we are reclaiming a heritage that is rich in strength, wisdom, and resilience. We are rekindling a fire that has been burning within the human spirit since the dawn of time. This connection to our past empowers us to face modern challenges with a renewed sense of purpose and strength.

As we walk the path of self-preservation skill development, we tread in the footsteps of our ancestors, drawing from the same well of primal strength that enabled them to thrive against all odds. This journey is an invitation to embrace the full potential of our human capabilities — physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually.

In embracing this ancient path, we find more than just self-protection skills; we discover a deeper understanding of ourselves and our place in the long, unbroken line of human resilience. Join me in this journey, and together, let's awaken the primal spirit that lies dormant within us all.

Survival optimisation in the modern world is also about unbinding natural instincts and re-focusing on the primal mechanisms that have to respond consistently and predictably (100% of the time) to cues of threat and safety. Our brains hate uncertainty and together with the ANS are highly geared and give priority to identify, assessing and responding to threat (an novel) stimuli. Self-preservation is also about enhancing these innate abilities, becoming consciously aware of subconscious triggers and being able to use Theory of Mind more effectively to look through veneers and masks of deception for more accurate inferencing. These ancient systems have been usurped by modern stereotypes.
