Anchors of Success: Applying Military Values to Corporate Leadership
Diogo’s journey began at the age of 17 when he joined the Portuguese Navy right after finishing high school. This pivotal decision introduced him to essential values like teamwork and camaraderie, which became integral to his daily life. He often reflects on how the Navy shaped him, teaching him the importance of collaboration, respect for others’ judgements, and the significance of being a people-oriented individual. This military experience has undoubtedly influenced his professional career positively, making him a valuable asset to any team.
Serving in the military is a life choice that demands a lot of sacrifice, hard work, and commitment to reach specific goals, just like in a corporate environment. Just as companies set yearly targets and strive to improve metrics. Diogo approaches his corporate role with the same dedication he had while serving. He instils the values he learned in the navy within his team, ensuring they understand the importance of their contributions to MiFinity and fostering a sense of pride in their work. During his tenure in the Portugues Navy, Diogo was fortunate to serve abroad the N.R.P. Alvares Cabral, one of the few frigates in the Portuguese fleet. As one of the youngest in his rank, he quickly adapted to the unique onboard atmosphere, acquiring crucial skills for various emergencies, from fire simulations to man-overboard drills. His attention to detail and comprehensive understanding of the ship’s structure were vital in preparing for any eventuality.
Diogo has kindly shared some advice to those seeking to transition into a professional career outside the military:
Life outside the military has its challenges. After working for years in an institution with many rules and etiquette, one can’t stop feeling lost and overwhelmed by the outside world. The most important advice I can give someone in that situation is to, like in a ship, not go against the current. Your path will show itself sooner than you think, and you’ll find your place and soon realize that if you maintain the same values and approach to life you previously had in military life, you’ll continue to be successful, happy and accomplished. The military life is a journey of enlightenment. After this, you’ll be surprised how ready you are to take on any challenge and opportunity!
