Anchoring in the storm

Mugisha’s shoes are well-worn, scuffed, and layered with fresh mud from the day’s long, rainy journey. Mugisha is no stranger to rough terrain or sudden downpours. His old but sturdy boots have trodden miles over wet ground, weaving through rush-hour chaos and navigating potholes that come with every rainy season. The boots’ soles, patched and re-patched, cling tightly to the footrests, helping him maintain balance as he makes his way through one challenge after another.

On this particular day, as the rain pours down, the rider picks up a passenger huddled under a small umbrella. She’s unsure about the ride in such heavy rain but trusts the experienced rider to bring her to safety. The shoes, battered as they are, seem to dig in just a bit more as the rider steadies himself against the gusts of wind, leaning forward with quiet confidence. His experience in braving storms becomes a source of reassurance for his passenger, anchoring her in that uncertain, stormy moment.


Leadership lesson:

Just as the rider’s old shoes and calm demeanor inspire confidence in his passenger, leaders in uncertain times can become anchors for their teams. In turbulent workplaces, it’s easy for staff morale to be swept away by anxiety, but a leader’s stability, like the rider’s firm grip on his footrests, provides a sense of security. By maintaining a steady presence, leaders can help their teams feel grounded, even amid the storms of change.

Just as Mugisha’s bike grips the muddy roads as he navigates the downpour, leaders can serve as a source of calm, strength, and direction—helping their teams navigate through challenges by being a reliable and strong anchor.

Hello Norah. This article has led me to think. There are many scenarios in this article that remind me of the leadership skills of a good leader- Life is never a straight line. Storms are part of the journey. So as a leader resilience, determination to overcome all situations comes to the fore and your team must see these qualities in you.
