Anchor your Goal to a Purpose

Milind Soman’s passion for running gave rise to Pinkathon. Now he doesn’t run alone. The whole country runs with him. While earlier he would set goals of 5km and 10km, now his goals found a purpose, and his purpose found an audience.
That is big indeed, but it doesn’t have to be as big and fat as that. Each one of us have goals in life – big and small. And each one of us have seen it fail more often than we would like to admit –big car and a bigger house, a little charity work to be done, a soccer match to be won, reading a book every month and some time, it can be a small little goal to just travel.
?Whatever your goal maybe, to make space for it in your everyday life is not easy. I think most of us can nod to that. Like one of my small little goal is to write more often than I am doing right now. But I just don’t have time. And the paradox is, even as I say so, I am acutely aware of the fact that nobody has time. You must make time.
?How?
?You will be able to make time if you can tie your goal to a simple purpose. Like, going to the gym or running maybe an uphill task for you, but if you are planning to go to Goa with friends where you would like to walk up the cliff of fort Aguada, or play through a football match or finish a 50 overs cricket match in the field, then your quest for fitness will be fueled by a purpose.
?It’s a catalyst and it works.

There is a kid I know who was curious about those bumpy dots in the lift panel. He got to know that it’s Brail. It helps blind people find their way in the panel. For quiet sometimes he wanted to learn Brail but did not get around doing it. I remember asking him once or twice, but he said that amidst school and tuitions and games, he just could not find time. Then a lady offered him a story reading and writing session in a blind school if he learned Brail. He was so excited about the offer that he actually learned it, and did so in a very short duration. I know that he works with the blind now for the last 4 years.
?You see, your goal should emerge from a purpose. The purpose is the ‘why’, and the goal is the ‘what’.??
The bigger your purpose, the greater your propensity to adhere to your goal. Weave it and attach emotions to it. Make the purpose bigger and increase the pool of benefactors.
?If the purpose is well fueled, the goal is well anchored.?????????

3 年Very well articulated!! I believe the same and make sure I achieve my short term goals to achieve the big ones … of course the purpose gives me immense motivation to be able to achieve those…?
