The Ancestor of FONIO is D. Longiflora

The origin of what we call today "FONIO plant (Digitaria exilis)" is in West tropical Africa. The assumption is that its ancestor of the current cultivated FONIO plant is Digitaria longiflora, which is common in tropical Africa over the past 5000 years.

The Glycemic Index (GI) of food is an index that rates the rate at which carbohydrates are broken down into glucose, measuring the level of glucose in the blood after eating the food. The lower the value, the slower the breakdown of carbohydrates.

Foods with a low glycemic index instill a greater sense of feeling satisfied or full after eating and over time, help maintain balanced glucose and insulin levels. The glycemic index of FONIO is characterized as a low (between 50 and 66). For comparison, the GI of other foods like white bread is 68 and boiled potato is 69.
