Anatomy of Tough Choices

It's tough making tough decisions and tougher communicating them. Two reflective questions can help.
1. What is the one value underlying my decision? It is easy to be the hero of one's own story but really introspect - if the decision is in service of a bias or a person, including yourself, rethink it, don't make it. If it is centered in a true value or principle, that's what the communication should focus on - the decision itself is, then, a byproduct.
2. Who will I disappoint? Tough decisions necessitate choices and often elicit strong reactions. In service of a value or principle, accept that some people will be disappointed and you will not be liked. Then, communicate with grace and extend support. People hurt because they care.
