The Anatomy of Light

Trying to understand the human anatomy is tricky. Light is also tricky to understand. There is lots of things about light that could be considered the anatomy of light. Light is made of photons. There are lumens, kelvins, Colour Rendering, lux, illuminance, luminance, lumen, to name a few. Fixtures themselves are have their own anatomy, including the casing, the drivers, the LEDs, the cables, the PCBs, and so on. Today, I will focus on some of what I consider anatomy of light in our fixtures.
The Dimension and the Optics of L1/T
This diagram is for our L1/T; a tiltable fixture that can be used in cove and cornice lighting as a replacement for less robust flexible fixtures. The dimensions highlight two major differences between two types of L1/T; the optics. On the left, there is what we call the convex (flat) type optics. This leads to a much shallower type of fixture, with a height of around 34mm. The tube type fixture has a height of 52mm. The difference in effect is significant, because the shallower the fixture, the easier it will be for the designer to fit it in a cove or cornice. Yet, the tube optics allows for a better diffusion of light.
The Photometric Curves
Another part of a lighting fixture's anatomy is the photometric curve. Our brand uses a variety of lenses, and this is the photometric curve of a 110° lens. From the point of the LED itself, we can judge what the light intensity is. B2's goniophotometer helps with this.

Feed and Inter Cables
These are the feed cables that work from start to finish along the length of the L1/T fixtures. I believe the maximum length of L1/T DC fixtures is 20 fixtures, which is a lot for this type of lighting. The cabling allows for White, Tuneable White, RGB and RGBW, and the inter cables have a longer style for more flexibility.
