Analyzing Swedish Restaurants Bankruptcy: A Data-Driven Approach (1998-2021)

In the world of business, understanding the factors leading to bankruptcy is crucial, especially for restaurants, which face unique challenges. I recently completed a project that analyzes the bankruptcy patterns of restaurants from 1998 to 2021 using SQL and Power BI, and I’d like to share some insights from the process.

The dataset contained 91,301 rows and 102 columns.

A total of 335 bankruptcies were reported out of which 41 were reported in 2008 (highest in a year). The reasons involved Personal Expanse, Debt to Equity . Taxes and Z-scores

The project began with the exploration of a comprehensive dataset spanning over three decades, offering a wealth of information on financial metrics, operational details, and external factors like market trends and competition. To ensure the data was accurate and ready for analysis, I focused on a few critical steps:

  1. Data Cleaning: The first step involved removing duplicate records and addressing null values in the dataset. By filling missing data with appropriate imputation techniques, I ensured that our analysis remained consistent and reliable.
  2. Data Transformation with SQL: Once the data was cleaned, I used SQL to manipulate the dataset and extract meaningful insights. Key operations included:
  3. Power BI Dashboards: After processing the data in SQL, I brought the insights to life in Power BI. By creating interactive dashboards, I was able to visualize:

The analysis from 1998 to 2021 revealed several critical insights, showing the strong relationship between high operating expenses and bankruptcy, along with the significant impact of economic downturns on restaurant survival. With visualizations that highlight trends over time, this approach offers invaluable guidance for restaurant businesses looking to avoid financial pitfalls.

This project not only enhanced my SQL and Power BI skills but also underscored the power of data in making proactive business decisions. I’m excited to apply these insights to help businesses thrive in an increasingly competitive landscape.
