Analyzing Carter Hart's Performance in Philadelphia: Why the Flyers May Trade Him

Managing Carter Hart's Performance in Philadelphia:

In this article, we'll take a close look at Carter Hart's performance in Philadelphia and explore where the Flyers may have mismanaged the young phenom.

Carter Hart's rise to the NHL was nothing short of spectacular. The young goaltender was a highly-touted prospect who quickly made a name for himself in the Philadelphia Flyers organization. In his rookie season, Hart put up impressive numbers, posting 2.83 goals against average and a .917 save percentage. He looked like the real deal, and Flyers fans were thrilled to have him.

However, as the years have gone on, Hart's performances have declined. His numbers have become less impressive than in his initial season.

Season Success

In his rookie season, Carter Hart looked like the future of the Flyers. He played in 31 games and won 16 of them, posting a .917 save percentage and 2.83 goals against average. He was named the NHL's Rookie of the Month twice and quickly became a fan favorite.

Pasco Valana's Opinion: Carter Hart came in as a young man with tremendous talent, skill, and the adrenaline to perform. He is one of the most cerebral goalies, with tremendous upside. He understands the game. The challenge on one side, Hart would want to protect that season, careful not to change anything so "he remains in the groove."

The flipside to that point is that every smart general manager and Head Coach is going to meet with the Goaltending coach of their respective team and find out exactly why Carter Hart is having the level of success that he's having and try to replicate that for their team and identify potential weaknesses in Hart's game. Cutting-edge goaltending coaches in the NHL will leave no stone unturned. They WILL identify the strengths of Carter Hart, along with the tendencies that Hart delivers every game. Plans will be made to take advantage of those tendencies. https://youtu.be/VjutQQwRY4A

Let me be clear, you won't find too many weaknesses in Carter Hart's game, but everyone has tendencies that they are most comfortable with when executing movement and pre-save preparation, along with post-save recoveries. Once that information is collected, it must be shared with the players in a way that they all understand how that information will improve their point production and their organization's plan.

This is why ......the Sophomore Slump

However, Hart's second season was a different story. His numbers took a dip, and he struggled to find consistency. He finished the season with a .914 save percentage and 2.42 goals against average, which were still respectable, but not as impressive as his rookie year. Unfortunately, Hart's struggles continued into his third season. He posted a .877 save percentage and 3.67 goals-against average in 27 games. He looked lost on the ice and lacked confidence. Many fans and analysts wondered if the pressure of being the Flyers' starting goaltender was too much for the young netminder. One of the biggest issues with Hart's performances has been his lack of consistency. In his rookie year, he looked like a star, but in his sophomore and junior seasons, he struggled to maintain consistency...or did he?

Defensive Issues, the environment in Hart's D Zone.

Another factor that may be contributing to Hart's declining performance is the Flyers' lackluster defense. The team has struggled defensively for years, and that puts a lot of pressure on the goaltender. When the defense is constantly giving up quality scoring chances, it's hard for the goaltender to keep the puck out of the net. While it's not entirely fair to blame the defense for Hart's struggles, it's clear that they aren't helping matters.

Finally, it's possible that Hart's struggles are due to the immense pressure of being a number 1 goaltender in the NHL. The pressure of playing in a major market like Philadelphia can be intense, especially for a young player. It's possible that Hart is struggling with confidence or anxiety, which is impacting his play on the ice.

Q: Is it really fair to blame Hart for the Flyers' struggles?

Pasco's Opinion: While the Flyers' defensive issues are certainly a factor, the goaltender is always going to be the last line of defense. When a team allows too many Grade A scoring chances, layered screens, and deflections, the goaltender is going to shoulder some of the blame. Hart is no exception. The solution is simple and Philadelphia would be smart to rethink a trade.

Q: Could a change of scenery benefit Hart?

A: It's certainly possible. Sometimes, a player just needs a fresh start in a new environment to regain their confidence and find success. However, it's important to note that Hart is still a young goaltender with a lot of potential. The Flyers may regret giving up on him too soon if he goes on to find success elsewhere.

Personal Opinion

Carter Hart is an exceptional goaltender that earned the reins with Hockey Canada's World Junior Team and earned his position with the Flyers. He is a driven young man that still has all of the skills and mental fortitude of a championship-level goaltender. When a goaltender with that level of success leaves the NHL in awe of his skills, there is video evidence everywhere of the tendencies of his game. Every goaltender has tendencies, once you understand them, like a combination lock you open the door to goals against.

Pasco's Opinion: Carter Hart's declining performances in Philadelphia may be a cause for concern. Only time will tell what the future holds for Carter Hart and the Philadelphia Flyers. In my opinion, explore development options before giving a competitor an easy project and a generational goaltender.

Excellent article, and I agree with the analysis. Nothing happens in isolation…outside of a lab environment, where 99.9% of the variables are removed (there’s always the possibility of some variable that wasn’t completely eliminated). So…even a stellar goaltender’s numbers are going to suffer when their defense hangs them out to dry repeatedly. That factors in, but it isn’t the only factor. When opposing players, coaches, and staffs analyze the goaltender’s game, they are bound to discover his/her “tells” (in poker terminology). Not only can reading those tells — and preparing strategies to exploit them — balance/tip the scales in the favor of the goalie’s opponents, but…a lackluster defense exposes and accentuates those tells that much more. When a goalie is exposed by his/her defense, when their tells are exaggerated due to trying to cover those defensive flaws, and their GAA skyrockets (as their save percentage nosedives)…their confidence starts to crack. Goaltenders are a TEAM’s foundation. Obviously, I come from the build from the goal ?? out philosophical school…goalie, defense, then scoring; a layered approach. It is a TEAM approach, a system wherein nothing happens in isolation. Fix the issueS, then reevaluate.
