AnalystX Jan / Feb 2024 News

Greetings and welcome to the latest issue of the AnalystX newsletter and the first for the year 2024. We have lots to report below but first an apology to our readers for the slow turn-around of this newsletter. Part of it is having to really rely on intrapreneurship and navigating the vicissitudes of large organisations.

It is worth spending a few moments reflecting on the frequently disregarded skill set: intrapreneurship. Combining the terms "intra-," which means within, and "entrepreneurship," this idea is more than just a catchphrase; for data analysts and professionals, particularly those working in the intricate organisational structures of larger companies, it is an essential toolkit.

The position of data professionals has become more expansive in the ever changing business world where data is the new currency. These days, it takes more than just analysing data and producing reports to drive innovation, optimise workflows, and produce value in previously unheard-of ways. This is where intrapreneurship enters the picture. It gives professionals the freedom to behave and think like entrepreneurs while still fulfilling their job responsibilities, promoting an innovative, adaptable, and continuous development culture.

Why is it that data specialists in huge organisations need this spirit of entrepreneurship so much? The special opportunities and challenges these locations offer hold the key to the solution. With their expansive worldwide reach and varied portfolios, large organisations provide an ideal environment for data-driven innovation. They do, however, also have departments that are divided into compartments, intricate hierarchies, and lethargy. Data workers are better prepared to overcome these obstacles, initiate change inside, and use data in transformative rather than merely illuminating ways when they have the mindset and abilities that come with intrapreneurship.

In the world of data, intrapreneurs are people who actively look for ways to contribute value rather than passively waiting for orders. They are the ones who challenge the current quo, investigate novel technologies and approaches, and promote data-driven decision-making across the board. By using this strategy, data and analytic professionals can take the lead in dismantling departmental silos, encouraging cross-functional cooperation, and eventually helping to create an organisation that is more resilient, creative, and agile.

Furthermore, leadership is crucial to intrapreneurship. It's about sharing knowledge, motivating and influencing others, and showcasing how data can spur good change. Technical expertise, business savvy, and soft skills like empathy, communication, and resilience must all be combined. It's not only helpful, but essential for data professionals and analyst who want to have a big effect to develop these intrapreneurial talents.

Our goal for delving into the topic of intrapreneurship in this issue is remind us all that the role of intrapreneur is one of empowerment, creativity, and, at the end of the day, transformation—whether it is by spearheading new data initiatives, pushing for a data-centric culture, or setting an example. It’s a hard one having to deal with the hegemony of the status quo but its definitely worth it. Let us know how you have enabled intrapreneurship within your organisations.

And now for the real stuff below on what AnalystX? has been upto and planning.

Data And Analytic Professionalisation

Sarah Blundell and Andy Lavelle

January 2024 has seen the launch of the NCF New Adopter’s Community. This support group meets every fortnight, to learn what’s new from the national team, hear from other adopter sites, and discuss their own adoption journey. We have 24 new organisations signed up to adopt the National Competency Framework in 2024. Organisations eager to join them can get started by pledging to adopt the NCF. They will then be invited to a New Adopter’s Introduction call before being welcomed into the New Adopter’s community.

We have also held our first Developing Data and Analytics Profession board of the year, with our new Chair Edward Kendall. The Board had updates from the Digital Profession programme, the CAO network, and updates from the Data and Analytics Profession team on the AnalystX workforce Survey, NCF, and a presentation on the proposed Data and Analytics Academy. All papers and slides can be found here.

In February, the National Competency Framework team attended the Yorkshire and Humber Skill development network event held in Leeds, where, we have met colleagues from the region and share information on our adoption progress, National Competency Framework and the skill assessment tool, where many find the session very useful.

AnalystX Huddles

Cecilia Lungu Michelle Vogelzang

Our 2024 huddle season started on a positive note on the 23rd of January. We had our first record breaking audience – 533 people attended the first huddle Introduction to the Federated Data Platform – part 1 and listened to Michael Williams and Tom Bullimore provide an introductory overview on the Federated data platform (FDP) from an Analyst’s perspective. The chat was lively with loads of questions and comments. One session was definitely not enough to do this topic justice, that is why we have not one but two other huddles on the FDP which will cover more detail. The next huddle on the FDP will be on the 20th of February 2024, please see our full schedule on here for more details. Both recording related to the federated Data platform is here.?

On 30th January we were joined by Dr. Paul Chappell who spoke about the published research that he completed with his colleagues Kaat De Corte , Emma Vestesson , Elizabeth Crellin and Geraldine Clarke looking into Differences in antibiotic prescribing in remote vs face to face consultations. The full publication for this research can be found on this link

On 6th of February 2024 we were joined by Jason Pickles , Neha Sehgal and Michelle Vogelzang who gave a deep dive into the Population and Person Insight (PaPI)? workstream majoring on the newly developed PaPI dashboard. The recording for this will be available on here by the 9th of February 2024.

Data science??

?At the NHSBSA, we process several hundred thousand job vacancies each year through NHS Jobs. Our Data Science team have taken the opportunity to explore this dataset and showcase its potential to provide valuable insight. ?The team developed insights into NHS data roles, which could be used to support the evaluation of the National Competency Framework (NCF) for Data Professionals, aimed at promoting a professional and standardised workforce. Process mining??

This blog post highlights the potential of patient flow analytics, using process mining, to improve elective recovery efforts in the National Health Service (NHS).

?Key findings:

  • Multiple referrals for the same condition (“scatter gun” approach) by GPs leads to unwanted appointments, hindering overall efficiency.
  • Inappropriate referrals due to outdated training or guidelines can be identified and addressed.
  • Unnecessary rework in referral services can be reduced, freeing up clinical and non-clinical capacity.
  • High volume of “unwanted” activities like DNAs and cancellations can be minimised.
  • Inappropriate clinician allocation can waste appointment slots and require rework.
  • Uncoordinated scans and tests can lead to appointment cancellations.
  • Outdated validation methods using spreadsheets can delay prioritizing patients and risk patient deterioration while waiting.

Potential Impact:

  • Implementing these improvements could release significant clinical and non-clinical capacity across the National Health Service (NHS).
  • More efficient use of resources can lead to reduced waiting lists and improved patient care.?

Conclusion:

Patient flow analytics offers valuable insights into bottlenecks and inefficiencies within the referral process. By addressing the root causes identified, the NHS can move away from activity-focused metrics towards impact-maximizing behaviors, ultimately facilitating sustainable elective recovery.
