Permitless Carry is shorthand for laws that, with some variation, make it legal to bring a handgun into public spaces without a license

Analysis: Constitutional Carry Reduces Gun Violence

An armed society may indeed be a polite society. Last week, a study published by Bowling Green University revealed that gun crimes have decreased in Ohio since the state passed a Constitutional Carry law in 2022

Ohio’s “Constitutional Carry” law was enacted on June 12, 2022. Under the law, concealed carriers will no longer be required to have a concealed handgun license to carry a gun. The law also eliminates training requirements and makes obtaining a concealed handgun license optional. This means anyone who can legally possess a firearm may have it concealed without taking any training classes.

A study published by Bowling Green University revealed that gun crimes have decreased in Ohio since the state passed a Constitutional Carry law in 2022. The study’s outcome has led lawmakers to draw some conclusions that are advantageous to the vast majority of gun owners. “The takeaway here is that we need to focus on criminals, not responsible gun owners,” said Ohio Attorney General Dave Yost, who commissioned the study.

The study Bowling Green conducted from June 2021 through June 2023 looked at gun crime in eight of Ohio’s biggest population centers. Researchers compiled data from Columbus, Cleveland, Cincinnati, Toledo, Akron, Dayton, Parma, and Canton from several sources:

  • Ohio Incident-Based Reporting System (OIBRS): An online system that allows law enforcement agencies to report crime data voluntarily.
  • Columbus Police Department: The CPD helped researchers with the crime data.
  • ShotSpotter: A system that records the sound of potential gunshots and analyzes the recordings to triangulate firearm discharges within a given area (like a city).

Next, researchers used their data to compare the incidence of gun crimes pre-permitless carry law (pre-PCL) and post-permitless carry law (post-PCL). This is what they found.

Conclusion

The study appears to confirm what many law-abiding gun owners already knew: an armed society is a polite society, but this type of analysis will continue to go ignored in high-crime areas in blue states.

What would "Common Sense" legislation suggest after analyzing the data?

The trash that thinks they can do whatever they please are being sent a clear and present message. Try it, I'll blow you away. Citizens need to take care of their issues on their own.?

Absolutely thought-provoking perspective! As Nelson Mandela once said - It always seems impossible until it's done. Your conversation about the shifts in society post-law adjustments really shines a light on the complexity of change. ??
