Analysis of All Presidential Elections | Sri Lanka

I have conducted an analysis of all presidential elections that has taken place in Sri Lanka so far. The first presidential election was held in 1982 and last one was in 2019. The next one will be in September, 2024. There were 8 elections in total. In every presidential election the competition was between two main players even though there were multiple contestants. However, this time the situation is little bit complex where few other contestants will also may receive votes upto a 1 million in total (except first two).

Dashboard 1: Voter Turnout

Highest voter turnout was in 2019 (83.72%) and lowest was in 1988 (55.32%). Generally there is more tendency to have more votes in presidential elections compared to parliament elections in Sri Lanka.

Dashboard 2: Vote Distribution among the winner and runner-up

The comparison of votes and percentages of winner and runner-up is given in above view.

Winner has to secure 50% + 1 additional vote to win out of the valid votes polled in the election. The lowest percentage was observed in 2005 (50.29%) and highest was observed in 1994 (62.28%).

Dashboard 3: Voter Turnout and Rejections

The above view showcases the distribution of rejected votes. Highest rejection was in 1999 (2.31%) and lowest was in 2010 (0.97%).

These are some interesting facts on Presidential elections of Sri Lanka. Starting from 1982 to 2019. Let's wait and see what it would look like in 2024.
