Industry News

While construction does tend to slow down a bit when we get into the winter months, there remains plenty to talk about from coast to coast as infrastructure and building never rests. The industry news section is here to talk about some of the biggest projects and updates going on around the country.

Nationwide

Monday of this week saw the U.S. Department of Transportation announce over $4.2 billion in American Infrastructure investment through a pair of grants. The grants will see funding go to 44 projects around the nation.

Texas

One of the most anticipated projects on the Lone Star State has finally broken ground as the massive $13 billion I-45 expansion gets underway in the Bayou City. The bad news for commuters in Houston? The project isn't expected to be completed until 2042.

In addition to the work in Houston, Corpus Christi is also a hub for some massive projects getting underway. As part of a $104 billion investment from the Texas Department of Transportation, the Corpus Christi area will get over $820 million in infrastructure money for road upgrades.

Georgia

In the city of Brookhaven, a $78 million project has been completed as the state of Georgia gets its first government building constructed from mass timber. The five-story building will host the city's administration office and council chambers.

Florida

One of the projects funded by the aforementioned USDOT investment is the replacement of the Long Key Bridge in Monroe County, Florida. The project is set to receive $114.16 million in funding in order to make the bridge more resilient against storms in the region while also widening the shoulders.

Elsewhere in the Sunshine State, funding is needed for improvements on SR-434 in Seminole County. The estimated funding needed from the Florida Department of Transportation is $4.5 million. The goal of the currently shelved project would be to reduce the traffic burden at the intersection of SR-434 and Ronald Reagan Boulevard by adding extra turn lanes to the area.

North Carolina

As North Carolina recovers from Hurricane Helene, the western portion of the state has several ongoing projects attempting to help the area get back on its feet. Debris removal, road rebuilding and more are part of the efforts as the North Carolina Department of Transportation looks for bids on the numerous projects required.

Among the highest priorities in the recovery efforts is the reopening of I-40 - the main transportation artery between East Tennessee and Western North Carolina. Estimates for recovery in the area are in the billions.

Contributing to the North Carolina Community Foundation's Disaster Relief Fund is open for those wanting to make a financial contribution to relief efforts.

South Carolina

In South Carolina, we see another project receiving funding courtesy of the United States Department of Transportation as the I-526/Long Point Road interchange will get a $195 million grant to cover a good portion of the $325 million costs associated with the project. The project aims to improve traffic flow in the crucial port corridor.

In addition to roadwork aimed at improving flow from the ports, rail services are also being upgraded in the Palmetto State. The key port of Charleston is getting an expansion to its rail facilities with a current estimated completion of July 2025.
