Amsterdam (The Netherlands) will be hosting 5th ENCOUNTER conference

ENCOUNTER is a professional network of European scholars, curators and academics in the heritage sector and others with a professional interest in the field of manor and country house history. The network facilitates meetings, seminars and conferences about different themes on the field of manorial and country house studies. The 5th ENCOUNTER conference The country house and the city will be held in Amsterdam, the Netherlands on wednesday October 2nd.

Bond between country houses and the city

The conference is organised by the Dutch Castle Foundation in collaboration with the University of Groningen and the Amsterdam School for Heritage, Memory and Material Culture (University of Amsterdam). The central theme is the bond between country houses and the city. In addition to the seasonal departure between city and country residence, there are also social, administrative and economic relations between the city, castle and country estate. The speakers will discuss all kinds of aspects of the strong ties that existed between city and city dwellers and their country estates and castles.

International speakers

A range of internationally recognized researchers and professionals will give lectures. Prof. Erik de Jong, who holds the Artis-chair for Culture, Landscape and Nature at the University of Amsterdam, provides a keynote together with historian and architect Antonia Weiss. They deal with the subject The city a garden, the garden a city: Shifting perspectives on city and countryside. Dr. Fred Vogelzang, historian and Head of Research at the Dutch Castle Foundation, speaks about Urban elites, castles and country houses in the 16th and 17th century in the Netherlands.
