AMS Osram introduces high-performance laser for long-range lidar systems

AMS Osram, a company specializing in intelligent sensors and emitters, has introduced a new eight-channel pulsed laser with a simplified system design to make long-range lidar systems more effective.

The SPL S8L91A_3 A01, a high-performance eight-channel 915nm SMT pulsed laser, will be integrated into lidar systems for autonomous driving vehicles, such as passenger cars, trucks and robotaxis.

The infrared high-power SMT laser is designed to improve long-range lidar systems in terms of operation, navigation and data processing capabilities. It also has four individual addressable anodes, where each anode is connected to two parallel operating laser channels.

These tests primarily assess the strength, safety, reliability and overall feasibility of the optoelectronic components. The EEL can deliver a peak optical power of 1000W and achieve an efficiency of up to 30%.

“Our new eight-channel laser module is a game-changer for the autonomous driving industry,” said Clemens Hofmann, senior principal engineer for lidar at AMS Osram. “It simplifies system design and boosts performance, making long-range lidar systems more effective and reliable. Integrating our advanced wavelength stabilization technology ensures superior performance across varying operational conditions.”

The SPL S8L91A_3 A01 will be launched in autumn 2024.
