AMR is one of the greatest threats to global human health. Wait, what?!

By 2050, antimicrobial resistance (AMR) could?cause 10 million deaths each year?and bring economic losses comparable to the 2008 financial crisis if no action is taken – warns the World Health Organization.

Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) occurs when bacteria, viruses, fungi and parasites change over time and no longer respond to medicines, making infections harder to treat and increasing the risk of disease spread, severe illness and death.

That's why FOUR PAWS published a new guidance document to support EU governments to comply with new regulations on antibiotic use in farming by ensuring higher animal welfare.

And why is the farming industry using antibiotics in the first place?

On intensive farms, animals are living in conditions that make them sick, so where diseases spread easily. To avoid sickness, antibiotics are used.?

How can the farming industry decrease the use of antibiotics?

Providing high welfare will ensure that the animals are in good health and their immune systems are strong, making them less prone to infections that require antibiotic treatment. This is the way forward to effectively decrease the use of antibiotics.?

With our report, we offer decision-makers guidance to reduce the need for antibiotics in farming, by improving animal welfare, in order to comply with new EU regulations and tackle AMR.?

What you can do?

You can help reduce the likelihood of antimicrobial resistance with your food choices. By adopting a predominantly plant-based diet and consuming organic products free of antibiotics, you can help end factory farming and reduce antimicrobial resistance.?

What we did?

We sent letters to the government in different countries/cities to ask them for an EU-wide reduction of antimicrobials use in farming through improved animal welfare.
