Amplifying Impactful Climate Advocacy and Campaigns
GIZ Indonesia & ASEAN
We work to shape a future worth living around the world.
Despite years of discussing climate change and environmental issues, our actions to mitigate these challenges still fall short. Many of us worldwide have been tirelessly advocating for these issues through various medias, from infographics to podcasts—but the real question remains: how can we create digital campaigns that make a lasting impact?
In response to this pressing need, the International Climate Initiative (IKI) Hub in Indonesia had the pleasure of hosting the 2nd IKI Communication and Digital Training with theme "Catalysts for Change: Strong Advocacy and Impactful Campaigns for a Sustainable World" in collaboration with Think Policy Indonesia on November 5-6, 2024 in Jakarta.
This immersive two-day event gathered some prominent speakers, consists of communications experts, social campaigners, and strategists to share about creating powerful advocacy messages that resonate both locally and globally campaign. Total of more than 90 participants have joined the training from around 20 IKI projects and other partner organisations.
Karin Allgoewer, Programme Manager for GIZ, Climate and Biodiversity Hub Indonesia, opened the event, “The training aims to strengthen impactful communication around biodiversity and climate commitments. Effective communication raises awareness and inspires diverse audiences to join the movement for environmental action.” said Karin.
Florida Andriana , Chief Growth Officer of Think Policy, added, “To build a sustainable and equitable future for Indonesia, we must prioritize climate resilience, digital innovation, and social justice.”
Day 1 began with thought-provoking sessions on impactful storytelling:
?? Finding Authenticity in Climate Campaigns – Puti Karina Puar (founder of Buibu Baca Buku Club, @byputy) and Gatot James from bapak2ID emphasized the power of localized, relatable storytelling, particularly by connecting with parents to make climate issues approachable.
?? Local Content in a Global Context – Irfan (Fanbul) Prabowo , CEO of Infipop, highlighted the risks of creating an echo chamber by focusing solely on substance. Genuine connection, he stressed, requires outreach and inclusivity rather than assuming others share our views.
Day 2 challenged participants to think beyond traditional approaches:
?? Demystifying Democracy and Advocacy – Nea Ningtyas and Yosifebi Ramadhani from Think Policy discussed balancing idealism with practicality: if you aim to go wide, you can’t go too deep, and vice versa.
?? Making Effective Buzz Beyond Social Media – Jimmy Kuntoro , Creative Director of Endgame Podcast, encouraged us to clarify our core identity, build a dedicated tribe, and recognize that the goal isn’t to reach everyone but the right audience.
?? Designing an Effective Campaign Plan – Firdza R. , Communication Advisor and Strategist, guided participants on audience-focused strategies. He stressed that impactful digital campaigns must be customer-centric, prioritizing the audience’s needs over self-promotion.
