(1) A.M.P. Champ of the Week

nominated by: Adrian Danila, Regional Director of Maintenance at Lessen

Chris Herman Hackney?

Birchstone

Elliot Abernathy

Describe Chris in 3 Words:

  • Resilient
  • Positive
  • Joyful

What makes Chris a ChAMPion in your eyes?

Even though I only had the opportunity to work with Chris for 3 months, he made a lasting impact on me. A little about Chris:

Chris has been in property management for 11 years and says that “maintenance is his life, and he loves it!”?He lives for the joy of completing a task which is importance in the maintenance field.

Chris is a husband to his beautiful wife for 7 years and father of their two boys (8 and 3) that keep him busy.?Outside of work, he loves to travel abroad, watching his oldest son play baseball and watching his youngest continue to grow.?Enjoying them seeing things outside of Atlanta makes me feel fulfilled.

“My goals are to make our residents feel comfortable and appreciated.?There is no better feeling than to enter a resident’s home, repair an issue and to see the satisfaction on their face.?I am hoping to see Birchstone become one of the most respected property management companies in the country; one property at time”?

My takeaway:

It's no surprise that Adrian nominated Chris. Everything Chris strives for is about fulfilling his resident's and ensuring his company is the cream of the crop.

Every company would be lucky to have a Chris Herman Hackney on their team!

(2) Something I Learned from a Book

I’m that person.

You know, the one who highlights and underlines the pages in books.?

You should see my copy of “Sustain Your Game” by Alan Stein Jr.?

It looks like I gave it to a class of kindergarteners – all meant in a good way!!!

There is tremendous content peppered throughout this book, but page 57 really gave me reason to pause.

Paragraph 2 refers to Jason Selk, the performance coach for the St. Louis Cardinals.

He wrote, along with Tom Bartow, that “most of the difference between the highest achievers and the average achievers is in how they think and how they prepare.”

Preparation becomes separation.

Read that again.

Preparation becomes separation.

The book goes on to share an example of Michael Phelps, the most successful and decorated Olympian of all time.

When his goggles broke and filled with water during the 200 butterfly at the Beijing Olympics, he still won (with his eyes closed!), because he had visualized this exact thing happening in practice.

What’s the lesson here?

Prepare.?Prepare.?Prepare.

For all the scenarios.

That way, when the shit hits the fan (and it will), you’re ready!?

(3) Takeaways from As Seen on LinkedIn

Start With Why.

Sound familiar?

It should if you’re a Simon Sinek fan.

I love and follow Simon Sinek, but that’s not what this is about.

I stumbled upon a LinkedIn post from Danny Allen, VP of Marketing at 97th Floor.

I won’t regurgitate the entire post but what floored me (in a good way) was the email he received from the CEO before any other information about salary, start times, team members, meeting schedules.

When letting him know he was selected as the VP of Marketing, he wrote out WHY he was selected for the role (in 3-4 specific paragraphed bullets).

WHAT?!?!?!?!?!?!?

Drop the mic.

Let’s start with the mere fact that the CEO sent him an email.

Not a cookie-cutter templated email either.

A customized, thoughtful email about why Danny was selected for the role.

It was so impactful that Danny shared that he references that email every 1-2 weeks.

If you’re looking for a quick fix to the Great Resignation, there isn’t one.

But a thoughtful email sent from the leader of your company to a new hire about WHY they were selected sure is a good start way to start!

(4) Someone Who has Made an AMPression on Me

As someone who's been in the multifamily industry 20 years, one of my favorite questions to ask others is: What are 3 tips you would give someone considering a career in multifamily?”

This is one of the 10 questions I ask when I interview someone that has made an AMPression (impression) on me.

Dana Caudell, President of Property Management at Bainbridge shared:

1.????Make sure you understand the importance of quality customer service and be willing to deliver 100% of the time.?

2.????Always be forward-thinking, no matter your role, this is an industry where you can go as far as you want in your career. It is an amazing industry.

3.????Constantly educate yourself and be willing to learn. Reach out to peers and other industry professionals continuously. It is a peer group like no other.?

If someone asked me to pick a favorite of her three tips, all three tips would be tied for first!?

Please take 2 minutes and read the rest of her interview - she's someone that should be in your network!

(5) a Podcast Pick

I consider myself a podcast junkie.?

I subscribe to TONS of podcasts!

My routine in the “nice months” in Chicago (aka, above freezing) is to walk 3-4 miles in the morning before my workout which is when I get solo time to listen to my podcasts.

Based on the current season, you can imagine that I’m not doing a lot of walking outdoors.

Anyway…here’s one that I adore.

It’s called “The Goal Digger” by Jenna Kutcher.

Admittedly when I first saw the title, I did a double take and was like:

“When did Kanye’s song become a podcast?!?!

I listened to Episode 540: “I Was Wrong, 5 Things I Swore I’d NEVER Do” and stopped in my tracks when I heard these 3 words.

I. Need. Help.

Why did it stop me dead in my tracks you ask?

Because I am sooooo guilty of this.?Guilty of not asking.

According to Jenna, “Those 3 words are like some of the most powerful words you can say and admit as an entrepreneur, and I think those 3 words can transform not just your business but your life.”

I agree with her, however, I think those 3 words can transform ANYBODY!

Parents, CEO’s, Students, Property Managers, Sales Reps, Pilots, Baristas…you get the idea.

My mother, whom I have evicted from my life (more on that another time), raised me that asking for help made me weak.

A very recent example of my mental battle with these 3 words is when I was carried an antique dresser down the stairs – by myself!

Why??Because I’m nuts.

I could have died and nearly did.

I was proud and ashamed of myself at the same time.?

When my husband found out, he was so disappointed in me.?

He doesn’t have an easy job wrangling me in at times.

So, if you were looking for a “sign” or dare I say “permission” to ask for help, this is it!

Go ASK, now.

You won’t regret it and, if I can help, please ask me!

No judgement.?EVER.

(6) Lasso Learnings (from Ted Lasso the show, not the rope)

Lasso Lesson #2

Being Relentless.

In this second episode, Ted Lasso makes it his mission to build a connection with every single person in the organization, not just the team.

Starting at the top with the owner of AFC Richmond, Rebecca Welton.

Unbeknownst to the viewers, Ted bring Rebecca biscuits (that he makes from scratch) each morning and dubs it:

"Biscuits with the boss."

He places the delicate pink box on her desk each morning and it's all Rebecca can do to resist the urge to tear the box open like a savage beast!

Her cold dismissal could have left him feeling defeated but instead, it seemed to ignite him (in a positive way) to persist with his clumsy charm and keep at it.

And that he does!

My takeaway:

Ted's relentless pursuit to build connections with every person in the AFC Richmond organization reminds me of this quote and, underscores my own mission.

To help apartment management professionals A.M.P. up their network, one connection at a time!"

Loved this edition. I really enjoyed the "why" story. One of the lessons in my "Great Leaders and Bad Bosses" seminar is to share the "WHY". So impactful.
