Ampleon's Ruggedness for UHF Broadcast

Ampleon's Ruggedness for UHF Broadcast

"Best in class" power amplifiers are typically measured in terms of bandwidth, gain, output power and efficiency. In the world of broadcast transmitters higher efficiencies, smaller packages and the flexibility to adapt to future digital transmissions are paramount but they also demand the highest quality, ruggedness and reliability. Indeed, UHF broadcast transmitter manufacturers are now focused on two themes; namely,

  1. The continual upgrade path for DTV exciters focusing on the latest ATSC 3.0 standard
  2. The drive towards compact designs offering improved efficiency to significantly lower operational costs.

Continuing from Ampleon's industry standard BLF188XR 50V LDMOS power transistor family there is now the latest BLF189XR derivatives enabling broadcast manufacturers of UHF wideband high efficiency transmitters (both liquid and air cooled) to pursue their quest towards more output power, better gain and higher efficiency over the complete transmitter system.

The rugged BLF189XRA delivers 20% more continuous output power (1700W) compared to the BLF188XR and is optimized to operate across the entire band from 10-500 MHz. The rugged BLF189XRB delivers 40% more pulsed output power (1900W) than the BLF188XR and is aimed at applications working at frequencies up to 150 MHz. Both devices are capable of operating with a VSWR up to 65:1 and provide the best possible efficiency at the lowest dollar/watt and are ideally suited for any high power Doherty configured amplifier design. In addition to broadcast applications these devices are also suitable for the industrial, scientific and medical equipment markets.
