Ampex and the Apollo Missions: Reflecting on 54th Anniversary
Ampex Data Systems
Delivering the best onboard SWaP-C optimized rugged data acquisition and processing solutions for our nation's defense.
As we celebrate the 54th anniversary of the Apollo 11 moon landing this July, we at Ampex are honored to have played an integral role in preserving these historic moments. Our advanced recording technology was an unseen but pivotal actor behind the scenes, ensuring every detail of these monumental missions was meticulously documented.
On the memorable morning of July 16, 1969, as Apollo 11 astronauts Neil Armstrong, Buzz Aldrin, and Michael Collins prepared for their transformative journey, our technology stood ready. Our commitment to innovation in data recording and magnetic tape storage allowed NASA to capture and store copious amounts of video/audio data.
Our systems diligently recorded each signal transmitted from the spacecraft, capturing everything from the exhilarating launch to the historic lunar landing and the triumphant return. When Armstrong navigated an unplanned lunar module landing, our technology was recording. As the computer on the lunar module sounded alarms in the final descent's tense moments, our machines were capturing those critical insights.

Our technology ensured that Armstrong's historic words, "Houston, Tranquility Base here. The Eagle has landed," and later, "That's one small step for a man, one giant leap for mankind," echoed not just on Earth but also in the annals of history.
Fifty-four years since the Apollo 11 mission, we are proud of our role. Our recording and storage technology has allowed millions worldwide to share in the wonder of space exploration, inspiring countless individuals to dream of what might be possible.
Neil Armstrong once said, "Every guy that's setting up the tests, cranking the torque wrench, and so on, is saying, man or woman, 'If anything goes wrong here, it's not going to be my fault.'" As Ampex, we resonate with these words. We strived, and continue to strive, to make sure that if anything goes wrong, it won't be because of us. Our journey with NASA's space explorations is a testament to our unyielding commitment to excellence, demonstrating the importance of quiet, relentless effort in the face of historic challenges.
