Electrical parts do eventually fail.
Finding replacements gets harder as the years go on.
A common old relay found on UK and US trains is the Square D, sometimes timers or just instantaneous type. New timers stopped being available some years ago. Applicable old family names are Series 7001 and Series 9050.
