AMMAN’s Relentless Journey to Top Copper and Gold Producer

In the seven years since assuming control of the Batu Hijau mine, PT Amman Mineral Nusa Tenggara (AMMAN) has turned around its operations. As a globally significant copper-and-gold producer with large, world-class reserves, AMMAN has implemented various value-creation initiatives to enhance productivity and cost efficiency. Since then, AMMAN has broken multiple historical records underscoring the relentless pursuit of excellence.

In the mine pit, AMMAN achieved the highest P&H 4100 shovel monthly productivity in January 2022, averaging 7,522 tonnes per hour (tph)—an impressive 69% increase from 4,462 tph in January 2018. Additionally, haul truck productivity rose by 37% for any set of distances until September 2023. These achievements, along with a 108% increase in total ex-pit materials mined from 2018 to 2022, underscore AMMAN's commitment to efficiency and productivity.

?In the processing plant, AMMAN reached a significant milestone by recovering approximately ten percentage points more copper compared to the period before AMMAN took control of the Batu Hijau mine for the same grade ex-pit ore. This achievement highlights AMMAN's dedication to maximizing the yield from its resources.

The establishment of AMMAN’s Batu Hijau rebuild facility for Caterpillar 793 C haul trucks has been a game-changer. With this facility, AMMAN efficiently disassembles and rebuilds each truck’s components in just 23 days, down from the previous 6-9 months. AMMAN has also significantly reduced the cost for each rebuild, now representing only about 35% of the previous expenses.

In the “hot seating” practice for heavy equipment operators, AMMAN has dramatically reduced shift-change downtime from 45 minutes to just 3.7 minutes, marking a 92% efficiency improvement. These efficiency gains, coupled with a remarkable safety record as we are one of the safest mines in the world, underscore AMMAN's commitment to excellence. This achievement is the result of blending extensive safety training at all levels with high-tech solutions such as GPS tracking of employees working in high-risk areas. And with Batu Hijau operating at full capacity around the clock, effective fatigue management is a top priority.
