AMETEK Foundation supports making STEM subjects accessible to visually impaired students in India

The AMETEK Foundation recently funded Vision Empower, a not-for-profit organization located in Bangalore, India, that empowers children with visual impairment through inclusive education.

AMETEK India requested this support from the Foundation to help make Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) subjects available to more students. STEM subjects typically require visual aids such as diagrams, charts, and models to understand their core principles or concepts. Using technology solutions, Vision Empower is bringing low-cost electronic braille readers to underserved areas.

Funding from the AMETEK Foundation will be used to support Vision Empower’s Antara-Hexis product, which combines its Antara content management platform with an ergonomically designed Hexis electronic braille book.

A team of colleagues at AMETEK India has been working together to create content for these books, focusing on mathematics and science lessons that support the school’s curriculum for 3rd to 7th graders. Members of the AMETEK India team are greatly invested in this project, which will help to develop a strong comprehension and fuel a path to pursue STEM careers.

India has one of the world’s largest populations of visually impaired people. According to Vision Empower, “Misconceptions in society on the capabilities of visually impaired persons has led to a lack of inclusive pedagogic processes and accessible foundational content in STEM subjects….Overall, these issues have led to persons with visual impairment being denied career opportunities at par with sighted persons in India.”

The AMETEK Foundation makes a more equitable world possible by funding non-profit organizations like Vision Empower that leverage innovation for inclusiveness. At AMETEK, we understand that the best ideas come from diverse groups of people working together and that the advancement of our industry, our company, and the world depends on improving STEM education and accessibility for everyone.

This collaboration by the team at AMETEK India exemplifies AMETEK’s goals of social responsibility and sustainable growth. By making STEM available to more students, it will generate a greater interest in these subjects, which will in turn add a greater representation of voices to the STEM field and widen the circle of possibilities for new technological advancements in the future.

Established in 1960, the AMETEK Foundation is the company’s charitable giving arm that empowers our colleagues to make a positive impact in their local communities, working together to make the world a better place.

AMETEK encourages colleagues to utilize the benefits of the Foundation to strengthen their own charitable donations of time, talent, and financial contributions, helping them to become more prominent contributors and stronger leaders in their communities.

Through the Foundation’s contributions and our colleagues’ worldwide volunteer efforts, AMETEK aims to drive a greater purpose for the company and improve the communities around the world.
