America’s Confronting A Mental Health Crisis

America’s Mental Health Crisis

America has been facing an ever growing mental health crisis. Nearly 60 million adults experienced a mental illness in the past year, with almost 13 million adults reporting serious thoughts of suicide.?

This crisis manifests in three overlapping areas: youth mental health, serious mental illnesses, and substance use disorders. The pandemic has intensified feelings of anxiety and depression, leading to a 38% increase in mental health care utilization.?

Young people are particularly affected, with rising rates of anxiety and depression. Serious mental illnesses contribute to social issues like homelessness and incarceration, while the addiction crisis, fueled by prescription opioids and dangerous drugs like fentanyl, continues to claim lives. Despite the gravity of these challenges, experts believe that solutions exist for each of these crises if there is a collective will to implement them.

The COVID-19 pandemic has exacerbated this crisis, with 90% of Americans feeling we are in a mental health emergency. This widespread unhappiness, frustration, stress, and anxiety can be attributed to various factors, including social media engagement, academic and economic stress.?

While mental health concerns are not entirely new, the current scale and intensity of the crisis are unprecedented. The number of individuals who died by suicide in 2022 was the highest ever recorded in the U.S.

To improve the situation, we need a multifaceted approach. This includes increasing access to mental health care, addressing the shortage of mental health providers, and focusing on upstream prevention and early intervention.?

We should also work on reducing the stigma associated with mental health issues and promoting mental health awareness in schools and workplaces. Additionally, implementing policies that address economic stressors and improve work-life balance could help alleviate some of the underlying causes of stress and anxiety.

By taking these steps and prioritizing mental health as a society, we can work towards creating a healthier, more resilient population better equipped to handle life's challenges.

Yet another **fantastic** article from Jack! Thought provoking to say the very least. Raising awareness about mental health is so, so important, especially in high-pressure fields like ours. Complacency within this area is all too often taken for granted, that is until it is too little – ?too late. ? A reminder like this can make all the difference in encouraging people to pause and prioritise their well-being. Please, take that time out to reach out – to those that may be suffering. ?? After all, it is "more than a job" you could save!!? Jack, your articles always strike a chord.
