American Landmark Apartments Partners With Nonprofit to Support Teachers
Multifamily owner and operator American Landmark Apartments has partnered with nonprofit Urban Teachers to support early career educators in Dallas. As part of the partnership, American Landmark will provide affordably priced housing at one of the firm’s apartment communities in the area for up to 128 aspiring educators in the Urban Teachers’ residency program.
According to American Landmark, rents have soared more than 15% over the last year in the Dallas-Fort Worth market, and this partnership will help ensure that these early career teachers have access to housing, which will allow them to focus on their mission of improving the outcomes of children in urban schools. Having a presence in the market for over two decades, American Landmark owns and manages approximately 16 communities. Participants in the nonprofit’s residency program will receive priority placement in a one- or two-bedroom apartment at a reduced monthly rent for a one-year lease term.
“Participants in our program come to the Dallas-Fort Worth area because they want to make a difference in the lives of children there,” said Peter Shulman, CEO of Urban Teachers, which is dedicated to preparing, certifying, and supporting new educators in urban communities. “We are grateful to American Landmark for supporting these educators on that journey. Having access to reliable, affordable housing means our teachers can stay focused on learning to teach in a way that honors and celebrates all children in their classrooms.”
An Urban Teachers participant already is benefiting from the partnership’s efforts after moving into one of American Landmark’s Dallas properties. “A lot of apartment complexes wanted us to make three times the rent, and it was just too much. We didn’t have the resources to live somewhere better,” Quanis Freeman said. “American Landmark made me feel included. It made me feel like my life matters; like all of the people who played a part in making this happen to value me and what I do in the classroom.”

American Landmark CEO Joe Lubeck added that the metroplex’s continued growth and value are dependent on the availability of highly trained teachers and high-quality homes for its residents. “We are delighted to play an integral role in this exceptional teacher recruitment program and in the future of the area by making these aspiring educators feel welcomed, respected, and connected to the community,” he said.
Urban Teachers is accepting applications for its residency program that begins in June. Prospective teachers must earn a bachelor’s degree by June, maintain a GPA of 2.5 or higher, and exhibit core competencies such as relationship building, valuing students and communities, and a commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and anti-racism.
