American Airlines to the rescue with Saint Patrick’s Day beer supplies

American Airlines have delivered some very special cargo to Texas just in time for St Patrick’s Day – Irish beer all the way from Dublin, via Heathrow!

What better way to celebrate Saint Patrick’s Day on March 17 than with a cool pint of an Irish beer. So when the call came into American Airlines Cargo’s GSA in Dublin – IAM – the Irish team sprang into action to ensure expats and locals alike could enjoy their traditional tipple on the big day.

In fact, IAM was put in charge of moving over 30,000 pounds (13,600 kilos) of beer to be sold in Texas in time for the upcoming holiday. The barrels were collected in Ireland and delivered by truck to American’s London Heathrow (LHR) facility.

On arrival, the operations team prepared the barrels for flight on one of the airline’s Boeing 777-300 widebody aircraft to Dallas/Fort Worth (DFW).

After the plane landed at DFW, a truck connection was organized so that the extra barrels of beer could be on-forwarded to Houston just in time for Saint Patrick’s Day.

American Airlines record breaking cargo day at Heathrow…

The beer moving success comes hot on the heals of American Airlines cargo team setting a new daily record for cargo throughput in Marhc.

In total, the American Airlines cargo team moved a staggering 489,849kg in one day in early March! The shipments included “temperature-sensitive commodities like fresh salmon, vegetables and pharmaceuticals, as well as some heavy metal industrial forgings” (Source: Air Cargo News).

What many people don’t know is that American Airlines is in fact the world’s largest airline with flights to over 350 destinations in more than 50 countries. The carrier is halfway through a US$3bn investment programme which will see it take delivery of over 500 new aircraft by 2020 (Find out more here…)!

Did you know that Heathrow is the UK’s busiest port by value? Each year over £100bn worth of trade goods travel via the airport – ranging from time-sensitive pharmaceuticals and food, to race cars, and heavy machinery.


So far in 2017, Heathrow has experience strong growth in cargo as well – with February (+4.4%) and January (+4.4%) volumes both enjoying strong increases. In fact, Heathrow welcomed a stagger 127,000 metric tonnes of cargo in just 28 days during February!
