America This Week: The Great Employer Holdup, Toddler Vaxes, Rogan v. Young, Meh Olympics, Office Wars and Streaming Blues
John Gerzema
CEO @ The Harris Poll | NYT Bestselling Author, Pollster and Strategist.
The latest trends in culture and society from The Harris Poll.
In The Harris Poll fielded February 4th to 6th, 2022 among 2,027 U.S. adults, we examine in a survey with Bloomberg News, the ethics in a frothy employee economy of the practice of leveraging other offers in order to secure a raise. And in this morning's Axios/Mike's AM, we are featured in the first story on toddler vaccines, which I describe as 'the next culture war'.
Also this week, we survey Rogan v. Young in the ongoing Spotify controversy. And with The Winter Olympics underway and medals hard to come by, Americans kind of go, 'meh', so along with Sportico we asked why? (hint, maybe free-skiing in next to nuclear reactors isn't such a winter wonderland).
We also report with Forbes on some interesting data highlighting the dichotomy between companies and workers around office work, and the latest consumer trends in the entertainment industry.?
Also, tune in for our?America This Week: From The Harris Poll ?audio event this Friday at 10 am EST on LinkedIn with me and Harris Chief Strategy Officer Libby Rodney . We'll talk through these stories and more.
Have a great rest of the week -?John Gerzema [email protected]
1.?Pay Me More or I Quit: Workers Play Risky Game With Their Bosses: Bloomberg-Harris Poll
Half of America’s workers are ready to pile pressure on their employers according to our latest data in?partnership with Bloomberg News . They’ve spent the past two years heeding their bosses’ – and the pandemic’s – unprecedented demands, and now they want more. Here’s what we found:
Takeaway:?Employees should be careful of these ultimatums as even if employers do match outside offers. It might decrease their willingness to invest in you if you seem ready to leave, says Catherine Golladay, head of Schwab Workplace Financial Services.
2.?The Next culture war: Toddler vaccines
In this morning's Mike's AM, we released new polling on parents of kids under 5 provided exclusively to Axios. And we found a major gulf: 73% of vaccinated parents said they're likely to vaccinate their kids under 5, while only 35% of unvaccinated parents would.
Takeaway: "When I looked at these numbers, I thought: 'Buckle up, PTAs. Toddler vaccines are the next culture war,'", I told Axios.
3.?Spotify Wars: Divide Over Free Speech and Preventing Misinformation
Despite a majority of Spotify users siding with Joe Rogan, over a quarter (28%) are considering switching platforms, and a fifth plan to or have already canceled (21%). Here’s what we found:

Takeaway:?Companies reliant on subscriptions need to be aware of how content will always alienate some users enough that they leave over disagreements with what is being said, something Spotify is reckoning with as they try to?grow beyond 100 million users by 2025 .
4.?Americans Disapprove Of Beijing Games And Want Boycott, Poll Finds: Sportico-Harris Poll
If you sense that fewer people care about the 2022 Olympics than usual, you’d be right according to our?latest survey with Sportico . In fact, a majority of Americans don’t believe they should be even taking place due to COVID and China’s human rights record.?
Takeaway:?In our latest Harvard-Harris Poll, American opinion of China is so low it's just above Putin and Antifa. But it’s also not just our surveys: while the Olympics is typically a significant event for marketers due to viewership,?Sports Illustrated is reporting the current competition ?is on track for the lowest-rated Winter Olympics in American television history.
5.?There Is No One Path Back To The Office, But There Are Some Best Practices: OfficeSpace Software-Harris Poll
While many workers have returned to the office, a majority don’t want to work there full time, and the complete return remains in flux according to our survey with OfficeSpace Software and?featured in Forbes . Here’s what else we learned:
Takeaway:?The result means that companies and organizations must walk a fine line to reopen offices properly and return to some semblance of normal operations – even as “normalcy” is difficult to achieve and even harder to define. And in a burgeoning labor market, employers might want to be more encouraging and less demanding...
6.?Shorting Streaming: An Industry Snapshot
Our?recent report ?on the current state of the entertainment industry explores consumer trends across virtual events, streaming services, and NFL fandom. We look at popular entertainment brands, ranking the leaders in brand equity and growth. Here’s what we found:
Takeaway:?The full report highlights streaming concerns amid inflation and new Harris data showing budget tightening. Also, in our weekly data, the NFL hasn't yet encountered significant equity damage over the Brian Flores lawsuit. See the full report (above).
