The America We Chose, or Did We?

The chilling sight of Nazi sympathizers marching openly through the streets of Ohio shakes the soul of our nation. It raises a sobering question: is this the America we’ve chosen? My instinct tells me these are vocal outliers, exploiting the freedoms of speech and assembly to amplify a vile ideology. And yet, it becomes harder to cling to that theory when we see a nation grappling with leaders who refuse to disavow such rhetoric outright.
I believe in diversity. I believe in living one’s truth. But there’s an undeniable weight to the hate marching alongside these ideologies. It is visceral, undeniable, and deeply troubling. What have we unleashed? Is this genie something we can force back into the bottle, or has the dragon of hate escaped, angrier and more unrestrained than ever?
Hate is born from fear—but fear of what? Fear of losing power? Fear of the unfamiliar? Fear of change? A history lesson would provide answers, but the burden of understanding belongs to each of us. The roots of this hatred run deep, nurtured by ignorance and perpetuated by complacency.
Still, I refuse to despair. If hate is rooted in fear, then the love I hold for my fellow Americans fuels the faith I have in our ability to heal. We have weathered dark chapters before, and though the division seems unrelenting, I believe in our collective strength to bridge this chasm.
No more division. No more "othering." We must reject the voices that seek to fragment us and embrace the wisdom of the ages: love thy neighbor as thyself. It’s a simple mandate, but it holds the key to a more united future.

The America we choose tomorrow begins with the choices we make today. Will we allow fear to dominate our discourse, or will we rise with courage and conviction to drown out hate with the enduring power of love and unity? The answer lies within us all.
