Abstract

AMCIS participants are invited to discuss how recent business and technology trends are creating new requirements for IS leadership competencies. Our focus is on the IS educational offering, ranging from traditional degree programs to microcredentials and certifications. We ask how our evolving IS education helps professionals and executives prepare for leadership positions, and what IS program leaders can do to increase the number of excellent IS leaders. Panelists will address related educational trends such as: ACM-AIS IS2020 curriculum, AACSB MaCuDe report, Canadian BTM initiative, ISACA’s renewal for academic partnerships, new AI-focused executive roles (e.g., OMB Executive Order to hire 100’s of Chief AI Officers throughout federal agencies), and many more. Participants will be invited to propose initiatives for AIS communities to consider, and especially ensure they build upon academic and professional organizations.

The Panel will take turns (sometimes skipping/revert rounds) to address some of the following issues as part of the broader question: “What are the issues with IS educational offering?”

  2. Gap in knowing +?doing?(refocusing competency and active learning)
  3. Skills?gap?viewed by industry and lack of program adjustment (e.g., decision making)
  4. Transdisciplinary nature of IS/IT (e.g., CS, IS, SE, law, etc.)

  6. Enrollment and how to bring the best to IS/IT programs, UG, Grad (cert.), PhD, etc.
  7. Professional identity (e.g.,?BTM) and integration of CS, IS, SE perspectives
  8. Program admin., faculty?workload, who makes the changes, ensuring alignment
  9. Funding for new faculty?positions, support for redesign and ecosystem lead, accreditation
  10. Industry partnerships for experiential learning, skills gap?anticipation, credited internships
  11. Realism of new hire requirements, e.g., 3-years experience, post-intern reserved seats
  12. Disparities in regional, international, rank (ivy league vs others) funding and execution

Roundtables

Participants and panelists will make 3 breakout tables and propose some “actions” for various IS community stakeholders, hoping to resolve some of the issues raised.

1. Questions

a. What do each of us (panel and audience) hear in our communities?

b. What are you doing (in our universities, and orgs.) that others could find inspiration from?

c. How are stakeholders reacting?

d. How can we do better and scale up?

2. Tables

a. Academia (Senior Prog Leads)

b. Industry (CIOs, CISOs)

c. Organizations (ISACA)

Best of luck with the gathering, it's a great opportunity for members to connect.
