AmCham Colombia to Bring 200 U.S. Buyers for Business Round in Colombia

The Colombian-American Chamber of Commerce, AmCham Colombia, is inviting U.S. businesses interested in expanding their supply chains with Colombian companies in the manufacturing and agrifood sectors to participate in its Colombia-U.S. Business Matchmaking event. The event will take place on September 10-11, 2024, at the Grand Hyatt Hotel in Bogotá, featuring around 400 Colombian exporters and 200 U.S. buyers.

Maria Claudia Lacouture , President of AmCham Colombia, stated that the event aims to connect U.S. demand with Colombian supply, creating and leveraging business and investment opportunities. These opportunities are particularly advantageous under the Free Trade Agreement (FTA) that has been in place between the two countries for 12 years, offering benefits to U.S. importers.

“The Colombia-U.S. Business Matchmaking event organized by AmCham Colombia will be the most significant opportunity to enhance business prospects with one of the United States’ main allies in the region. It will feature 200 U.S. buyers engaging in business meetings with 400 Colombian exporters. Participants will also have access to networking spaces and can schedule up to 27 meetings over the two-day event,” detailed Lacouture.

She added that the primary focus will be on businesses in the agrifood and manufacturing sectors, including the fashion and cosmetics systems. Participating U.S. companies will include distributors, brokers, direct buyers, specialized companies, jewelry boutiques, supermarkets, and companies seeking Colombian suppliers.

Colombia: The Principal Ally of the U.S. in the Region

The over 200-year diplomatic relationship between Colombia and the United States has established Colombia as the most important commercial and ideological ally for the North American country in Latin America. The Free Trade Agreement between the two nations facilitates trade and provides significant benefits such as tariff exemptions.

Colombia is a strategic trade partner for the U.S., not only as the gateway to South America but also due to its advanced port developments, making it a crucial player in Global Value Chains (GVC) and enhancing its attractiveness for nearshoring. The country excels in indicators such as international shipping costs, competition, quality of logistical services, and trade infrastructure, as highlighted in the World Bank’s 2023 Logistics Performance Index.

Additionally, Colombia’s Port of Cartagena ranks as the third most efficient port globally according to the 2023 Container Port Performance Index by the World Bank and S&P Global. It also leads Latin America in connectivity to the international market in the first quarter of 2024, per the UNCTAD Port Liner Shipping Connectivity Index. Furthermore, Colombia’s Buenaventura Port is recognized for its connectivity, ranking eleventh in Latin America in the first quarter of 2024, showcasing Colombia’s regional export potential.
