AMCC UPDATE: February 2, 2024
American Manufacturing Communities Collaborative (AMCC)
The AMCC represents a coalition of nationwide communities with the shared goal of revitalizing American manufacturing.
1. Roundtable Discussion for this week's National Monday Call
We look forward to seeing you on AMCC's next National Monday Call at 11:30am ET / 10:30am CT / 9:30am MT / 8:30am PT! We're all working to keep pace with the scope and scale of new investments and overcoming regional challenges so as to advance evidence-based sustainable development; it's a lot to keep up with to be sure. These Monday Calls are one way for regional leaders to quickly and efficiently learn and share. We try to strike a balance between presentation-type calls and open round-robin type calls so there's time and space for participants to share the real deal from their next of the woods and build trusted relationships that add value. America's strength is bottom-up collaboration, not brittle top-down dictatorial edicts like we see in non-democratic nations. So, to enable increased collaboration, please let us know what topics, guests, or discussion ideas would bring even more value to you and your regional manufacturing community. Use this simple Google form now to let us know your ideas for Monday topics. Thanks in advance for communicating with us.
And what a great presentation this past Monday from high schooler, AMCC intern, and founder of the Subortus Project, Olivia Liu! Thanks Olivia! If you missed it, you can access it here on our website. In fact, why not share the link with manufacturers, workforce development types, and K-12 stakeholders in your region right now so high schoolers where you are can get in the game too? Olivia shared her passion for getting young people engaged in the future of U.S. manufacturing. To that we say, we need a million Olivia's! Take a look here too at some of the work she's done to get her peers excited about manufacturing. We'll bring it up again with more information on an upcoming webinar led by Olivia and her peers targeting teens.
Please reach out to AMCC Operations Director David Van Siclen if you are having issues with your Monday call invitations, or have others you'd like to add. You can find recordings of past Monday presentations here.
2. AMCC and National Governors Association (NGA) Webinar this Wednesday
The NGA Center and AMCC are co-hosting a webinar on Wednesday, February 7th at 1:30 p.m. ET on how Governors, state commerce leaders, and other state leaders can help regional manufacturing consortia weave state interventions with federal “designations” and/or other support to strengthen key component parts regional manufacturing ecosystems i.e. the Big 6 areas of workforce, research & innovation, supply chain support, infrastructure, trade, and capital. We hope you can join to hear how state leadership in three places, Connecticut, Mississippi, and Utah, are improving the outcomes for manufacturers and their ecosystems of support. Thanks to BFF Sally Rood w/NGA for leading the event, we hope the first of many to come! Register here and join us Wednesday.
3. This Week's Federal Investment Announcements from Several Agencies
It's critically important that regional leaders become aware of and share about these funded initiatives taking place so regional stakeholders can look at possible collaborations with other relevant initiatives and networks when and where it makes sense. Thanks for taking a look through those happening above in your backyard and let us know if we can help weave efforts together.
4. Brookings' Mark Muro on NSF Engine Finalists and Place-Based Policy
Here's a great discussion between National Economic Advisor Lael Brainard and Brookings Senior Fellow Mark Muro on the proliferation of place-based policy initiatives and the current administration's objectives to diversify economic growth and prosperity to more American regions. If you have the time, listen to Brainard's speech and subsequent discussion with Muro in its entirety. There's a lot of great thinking behind inter-agency collaboration that will be required to effectively integrate these interventions into a greater outcome than the sum of its parts, such as NSF and EDA agreeing to collaborate across their Tech Hubs and Engines programs. Of course, as Muro describes in his commentary on the discussion, the real proving grounds for place-based policy rests on regional and local leaders developing resilient networks and coordinated strategies to make smart investments that drive the best outcomes for their communities and businesses together.
5. Job Posting: SSBCI Compliance Analyst
Thanks to BFF Ronald Kelly with Treasury for sharing this open position. The SSBCI Compliance Analyst will support projects and initiatives out of Treasury's ORP/OCA, supporting compliance of grants, loans and other agreements with funding recipients. Give the position a look on USAJobs, and share with those interested.
6. Reminder: Upcoming CREC Events on Strategic Alignment
Friendly reminder that CREC, through the State Economic Development Executives (SEDE) Network, will be hosting two events reporting the outcomes of their work to encourage greater alignment between state and regional Comprehensive Economic Development Strategies (CEDS). The webinars will be held on 2/8 and 2/15, featuring leaders and stories from Idaho, Louisiana and Michigan, followed by Colorado, Kansas and Wisconsin. Register for these events at the links above, both are free and open to practitioners.
7. Manufacturing an American Century Episode 10 now available!
AMCC's podcast has made it to double-digits! This was a special episode and great interview with the brilliant Kate Gordon, scholar at UC Berkeley and Former Senior Advisor to Energy Secretary Jennifer Granholm at U.S. Department of Energy (DOE). We talk about regional manufacturing's critical role in America's clean energy transition as well as the federal trend toward more place-based interventions in more U.S. regions, yay! More episodes to come with incredible guests in the 2024, give it a listen, and share from Apple Podcasts, Spotify and our website. Thanks also for sending us feedback.
