On October 15th, 2021, AMC theaters announced that 240 of their U.S. locations and over 100 U.S. markets will add in open captioning to certain showings. They aim this adaption for a better viewing experience for people who need open captioning to understand the movie better. Open captions are like subtitles and cannot be turned off during the showing. Before this inclusion, some customers would have to use a special closed captioning device, which many complained to be difficult or uncomfortable at all of their showtimes.?
AMC will continue to offer showtimes that are closed captioning and some customers will need to use assisted listening devices. However, AMC will require every AMC market to have at least two theaters that will have open caption showtimes available weekly for all new releases. AMC is moving in the right direction by incorporating open captions to some of their showtimes and allowing everyone to enjoy their experience.?
AMC believes in adopting “inclusive programming” and being at the forefront of inclusion of movie theaters throughout the country. This new inclusive strategy has resulted in many positive consumer responses and AMC expects to have a strong demand in their awareness of showtimes that offer open caption.
