The Ambushes of Franchise Ownership
Getting into business is a daunting idea, and there's a lot of fear around that. My job as a franchise consultant is to help people get over that fear and have rigor and frameworks around the research process, so you can get facts.? But fear is still going to be there and there's three ways that it manifests itself, I call them the ambushes.?
Spousal Ambush
The first ambush is the spousal ambush. This is when you want to get into business, but your spouse doesn't think it's a good idea.? This is something that you have to manage, because they're along for this rollercoaster ride with you and your entrepreneurial journey. But I recommend that you include your spouse in the process, or at least the first meeting, so that they know what it is you're doing.? They need to understand the rigor that we have in place to get it done, and that builds confidence.?

Friend and Neighbor Ambush
There's also the friend and neighbor ambush.? You might be excited to talk about your entrepreneurial research with friends and neighbors and other people who are interested, but of course they're going to give you their opinions.? I want you to consider the source and ask questions to yourself like “Have these people ever run a business before?” If you decide that you're going to get the opinions of those that you love, trust and that you're friends with, choose those that have already run businesses.?
Self Ambush
Finally, the third ambush is the self ambush. This can come in many forms, but often it's because of searching the internet. If you're looking for something bad about any topic, you're going to find it. I encourage you to just go do a search and put scam at the end of whatever word you choose and find all the results, because it's out there. Anybody can say anything about anything on the internet.?
What I encourage you to do is to get the facts straight from the people who are doing it, the franchisors and the franchisees. Those owners are out there already stepping into the shoes that you want to step into, and they can tell you what it's really like.?
If you want to get the facts and control the fear, work together with us at FranNet and we'll help you find the right business.
