Is not a phone call you want to get …
But it's what happened to me last week, when my husband suffered a terrible injury to his right arm (in a charity football match) and was blue lighted to A&E with an open fracture.
In the end he had a complicated 4 hour surgery which in the words of the surgeon was “as bad as it comes” as there was serious concern he could be paralysed in his hand.
You can catch up on the full story (and some very cool x rays) here.
Considering the severity of the injury - it was miraculous that he was discharged over the weekend.
The relief as we walked out of hospital left me really emotional and full of gratitude after a very stressful few days.
Last week, I'd planned to talk about mental health with my content (particularly as a health coach for women) - timely with it being mental health awareness month here in the UK.
Life can throw you some serious curve balls - no one is immune to it.
But I have always lived my life by the philosophy that while we can't control what happens to us …?we can control the way we respond to it.
This is also where community (be it in person or online) plays such a vital part of our wellbeing.
Our village and church community has rallied around us, doing all they can to support our family after this huge shock.
And it's been for me in owning my shock for what's happened … to lean on the help and support I need from others - something I've learned with a lot of personal growth is how we can truly move forward with things.
Which means, I've moved all my non essential work - keeping the essentials in. ?
I've delegated help for meals, chores and support with my daughter.
What I know for sure is:
I know I am not alone.
I can ask for help.
I need to look after myself.
I have made space for what I need and what is important - my family.
Now I do appreciate this is an extreme situation where the offers of help and support have been forthcoming … but what do you do as a busy woman, with so much on your plate and you can't see a light at the end of the tunnel?
I believe that situation is the worst kind. Worse even than what I am currently dealing with.
How do you ask for support when you feel that is is “just what it is” and that you just need to “get on with it”.
As women, we are each other's community - be it near or far.
I get that life is busy and we have a million demands on our time ...but can you imagine what a difference it would make if we could all do this from time to time...

My hope is that this will go someway to support you and your mental health, wherever you may find yourself right now.
I'm pleased to report that my husband is doing well and his recovery is underway.
I'm taking my nursing duties very seriously ??
We even managed a short walk in the sunshine and fresh air the day after he came out of hospital, which was so good for the soul.
Please know that I am always here for you (and that I love to hear from you and answer every message personally!) - and that I have always got your back - as does our whole incredible Thriving Woman Project.
Big love always,
Wendy
PS. After 16 years of marriage and swerving the mowing responsibilities - my biggest accomplishment of the past week has been mowing the lawn (I even strimmed). It's given a new found gratitude for all the "blue jobs" that I will be owning for the foreseeable.
