Ambivalent clients??
Based on the Motivational Interviewing Model most clients seeking therapy are ambivalent about changing. Therapists are encouraged to expect ambivalence and mixed feelings about making decisions or taking any action. Clients are struggling with the desire to change and to stay the same. They are often weighing the pros and cons and their clinician can help them process their thoughts and feelings. This can be a slow and gradual process. It takes patience as well. And the clients can be in various stages of change. This could be pre-contemplation, contemplation, preparation, action, or maintenance. We need to identify their stage of change and work with them through various stages as they move towards growth and change. Some of these clients move quickly and some slowly. Its an exciting process to observe when they decide to work hard to stay sober, comply with treatment recommendations, take their medications, or attend group therapy.
